I'm 16 and I babysit for a family who is having a baby any day now. Recently, they inquirred about whether or not I have had a flu shot this season.

Now, I'm a healthy person. I never get sick and I've never had the flu, nor has any of my family that I live with. Additionally, we never see the need to spend money on flu shots.

I know that the family is concerned about their baby, but I don't see a reason for me to spend 75-100$ on something that will only give them a peace of mind. I'm not sure if I should tell them it is not nessacary to worry or if I should just get the shot (I HATE shots- I'm a big baby). Thanks for Reading.

The flu shot doesn't cost anywhere near that much, most of the time. From your doctor, including the appointment, maybe. But some places, including for example some pharmacies, offer low-cost shots, maybe $10 or 15.

In all honesty, if I had a new baby, I would want my babysitter to have a flu shot, too. It is recommended that anyone caring for a child under 6 months get one.

Anyone who works with the elderly or young children should have shot. And Jane is correct - the cost should be minimal at your local health department or pharmacy.

I also think you should get the shot and if it really costs that much where you live maybe you can just explain to the babies parents that you can't really afford it. If It was my baby, I would offer to pay for it for you. They may also. They just want to protect their little one and the cost of that probobly won't matter to them. If you say nothing and don't get the shot they may think you just don't care enough about the baby. You need to tell them your reason (money). The flu can be deadly to such a young infant.
