I am having a real difficult time when timing my calcium intakes. I take synthroid around 6 am so I dont take the calcium after breakfast..I teach and cannot remember to take it with lunch..So I come home and have a snack so I can take 500 -600 mg and then if I take it after dinner its closer to the time I take th strontium. THERE IS NOT ENOUGH HOURS IN THE DAY ...Need to take 1500 mg but WHEN??? Perhaps I need calcium that doesnt need to be taken with food.....Is calcium citrate as effective as calcium carbonate???? THANKS
PS that should say Help SPACING out ......lol

Hi mbeth..i had the same problem with spacing things outs, but figured it out..finally. I too take synthroid early in the morning. I've found a calcium supplement called EZcal 1000 with D that is formulated to be taken in one dose daily. I've found it at Walgreen stores and online. The 1000 in that plus what in a multi and a good diet takes care of the calcium requiremnt for the day. I take the calcium, multi, extra magnesium and a once a day fish oil all at the same time, usually after lunch. Then the 2 strontium caps at bedtime. Calcium citrate can be taken without food, while calcium carbonate needs to to help with absorbtion. Hope this helps...take care..phyllis

Hi There,
Sounds good but I thought I read that we can only absorb up to 600 at a time...So dosage needs to be spaced....
I looked at calcium citrate but I'd have to be alwasy popping pills with that too....still looking.................BUT really like th ideas of 1000 mg at a time!!

I've read and been told 500mg at one time. Sounds like this ca supplement Phylwill is taking is "specially formulated to be taken in one dose". Maybe she will elaborate.
Mbeth, I'm going nutz trying to figure out all of this too. I'm taking the strontium at bedtime because it has to be taken on an empty stomach. I go to bed at 11pm and I like to leave 3-4 hrs before taking the strontium. That sure interferes with my TV snacks like popcorn. I feel like this whole thing is cramping my lifestyle.:D
ETA - ca citrate is just as effective as the carbonate. I'm taking a ca supplement with 3 kinds. Whichever one you take, make sure you get it with magnesium which is necessary to absorb the ca. Also Vit D. These are vital.

Hi mbeth and peppurr..i've read the same thing too, when i first bought the once a day calcium i talked to the phamacist at Walgreens and she told me that since your body only uses what is need for that day that the once a day formulation was ok to use. i don't know how it works, but my labs have been good and it sure has made my life easier.
I take NSI strontium and on that bottle is says it can be taken with food. Most evenings i don't eat after supper, but if i do its something light and i don't worry about the totally empty stomach. I do the best i can, but don't worry if i can't all the time. take care...phyllis

I'm definitely going to look into this EZcal and NSI strontium. Thanks Phylwil for this info! I don't usually eat much after dinner but when I'm put in a position where I can't then I suddenly want to eat more!!:D

Hi mbeth..i don't know the specific number of hours between syhthroid and calcium, but i would think 2 or 3 would be enough, long enough for the synthroid to be absorbed by the body. How much do you take? Is it total replacement or a boosting dose? Here's an idea...do you get up during the night to use the bathroom? If so, take the synthyroid then so you can take the calcium with breakfast. I think your ok on the yogurt 3 hours before the stronium.. its supplement doses that would interfere more than whats in a cup of yogurt..that is unless your eating the whole carton...hahaha. Check the label to see how much calcium each serving contains. I've been taking SC for well over a year and have gotten over the gotta do it right everytime thinking. If i forget to take caclium for a day, i skip the stontium..and sometimes i forget both..no biggie. Don't make yourself crazy trying to do everything right all the time. take care...phyllis

Well now something else has been added to the pot. Been given levequin for my sore throat. Took it at 5 and the calcium an hour late after I ate. Just read calcium interfers with the absorption of the antibiotic. THIS IS SO CRAZY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!EVERYTHING HAS TO BE SPACED AND i'M ONY UP 18 HOURS IN THE DAY...YIKES...........get to get some sleep ...feel lousey...BUT wait have to wait until 10:30 so I can take the strontium.
YOU are RIGHT Phyllis...I got to ease up on this..............Thanks and take care.......

What does the strontium do? Is it for osteoporosis?

Hi pack92, welcome to the board. Strontium is an alternative to the now available osteo drugs without the side effects that can occur from them. It's a natural supplement that some of us here are taking to help build our bone density. Do a search for strontium citrate and you can get a more detailed explanation. take care...phyllis
