ok-this is sort of gross so bear with me-i have had these little white things(maybe more offwhite)on the back of my tongue or in my throat-you can feel them and cough and they come out-i also have met a friend who has the same thing-this first started 5 yrs ago-i went to the doc about my throat and he told me my tonsils were rotting out-could this be the cause and if so would it still be happening-it doesn't happen all the time just every now and again-my friends doc told her it was from sinus infection and cold-so any answers

I get those things too! They lodge in my tonsil - so does my daughter. I was listening to a doctor on the radio and some lady called in with the same problem, he explained what it was but I forgot! It wasn't anything like tonsils rotting out because this started when I was about 9 or 10 and I am now 44 and my tonsils are fine! It's nothing bad, just kinda gross...
Oh, and it happens if I eat a lot of bread!

Hi
There was a discussion about this on the dental problems boards...I believe it was called "white "chunks" falling out of my mouth" or something like that. Go there and see what you can find out.
BTW-I get those too! From what I understand, it's food particles and other gunk that have accumulated and gets lodged in the tonsils. VERY GROSS!! UGH

i get those, too...i have gotten them all my life...they make my throat a litle sore, so i reach back there - CAREFULLY - and remove them...they come right off, and my throat feels better...i think they are waste from your tonsils doing their job, so thats why my throat feels better when they are gone....

Actually, it's food particles that become trapped in the pockets of your tonsils. My pediatrician calls it "petrified", meaning that there is no infection, just a lot of that stuff lingering within the tonsil.
My son has very enlarged tonsils with that stuff and had strep throat on and off since he was a baby until he got to be about 10.
Doctors advice was to gargle with salt water as that is an astringent that can help to shrink the tonsils and also help cleanse that stuff out of there.
I have it, myself, to an extent but it's nothing to worry about...just might give you a bit of bad breath so keep the breathmints handy! ;)

My doctor told me that they were simply hard saliva build-up. He said there was nothing to do about it, but not to worry. It's weird because I used to get them and now recently they've begun again.

I have noticed mine is only on the right side of my mouth. I hate to sound gross here but I use a toothpick and clean out the spot. I can't stand to think that there is something in my mouth that looks the way that stuff does.

I had the abcesses too. After a year of these things falling off, I went to a ENT Dr. and she told me that it was food buildup. Your tonsils have these natural craters and food builds up in them and eventually fall off. My ENT Dr. said it was not bad or dangerous. She recommended I have my tonsils removed being that I have had them for so long. Plus, not to mention the fact my tonsils were the size of golf balls.
To make a long story short, I chose to have my tonsils removed because I was tired of dealing with those little buggers. I had my tonsillectomy 3 weeks ago. It was quite painful but I got through it.
