I had braces 18 yrs ago and the dr put upper and lower wires in to keep my bite in place. I also wore at night a removable retainer to keep everything in place. Two years ago my top wire popped out and my new ortho said I did not need it anymore. That was when my bite started shifting. He was constantly adjusting my removable night retainer but my bite still slipped. Then my removable retainer broke after so many adjustments. Finally my ortho put a new cemented wire on top and made me a new removable wire. Every two months I need to have an adjustment to the removable wire now. Presently I am having pain in my cheeks and dizziness because of the last adjustment. I don't know what to do a this point, readjust again, wear the retainer 24/7 instead of just at night, and/or get a new ortho or TMJ dentist? What are your thoughts? My ortho thinks I am making these symptoms up and has no patience for me and my situation.

I was told all this too.
And told I had advanced TMJ by some and not by others and around and around I have gone for almost 2 years.
But there was light at the end of the tunnel for me. My TMJ symptoms have disappeared as mysteriously as they began. My bite is off and will always be off. I had an ortho tell me I needed 6-9 months of splint therapy first to the tune of $2500 and THEN I could get braces. I opted against it - I was given this proposal in July.
I am currently symptom free.
