So, I finally think I might have found someone who can help me.
I've been reading this message board for a while- finally went to a specialist. This guy sounds like he's helped alot of people, he does all the x-rays and tomographs to mathmatically measure where you should be lining up. :confused:I'm nervous though, about paying so much $$ and not knowing what the result will be.

Can someone tell me what the difference is between splints or orthontics?
I guess "fixed" orthontics are what he uses...finds out where the jaw should line up and then it should adjust to that point?

So, why do some doctors use "fixed" and others use "permissive" splints.
I'm confused.

hi , i think your at the right site , bitesplints are used to get your jaw inline where it should be , then you wear the splints from 2 months to a year depending on your case , then orthodontics come in to play , your orthodontist or tmj guy will apply braces to start fixing the bite if you teeth are healthy an have enough root , other wse crowns will be needed , if your teeth are healthy this is what happens , braces applied with hooks for elastics , then your splint will start to be cut away a set of molors at a time so the elastics can pull the molors togather closing the gap , this is done set by set till all the teeth hit , the reg orthodontic adjustments will be made every 4 to 8 weeks till your finished , this can take from 18 months to a few years , DEPENDING on how bad your tm joints are an bite , as to how fast things can move , this is a very long an slow process an costly , BUT WORTH EVERY PENNY, i hope this helps this is the short version of how my treatment has gone , i'm still in treatment a due to finish in the next few months , all PAIN FREE
