On monday 26 november i had to go into hospital for an op to remove my wisdom teeth which were growing the wrong way plus a few others, this was to be done while i was under a general anaesthetic. Anyway, i was given the injection in my arm and felt the anaesthetic go up my arm and then my throat just closed up. I was obviously laying down for this and was getting a fair amount of saliva in my mouth, but because my throat closed up i couldnt swallow it, which also meant i couldnt breathe. I'm laying on the bed drowning in my own saliva! Of course the anaesthetic is now in my system so im feeling im about to go under but i cant breathe. I thought about fighting to let the aneasthetist know there is something wrong but strangely felt to relaxed to actually do anything, the last thing i remember is closing my eyes thinking oh well i'm going to die but i was so calm about it. People say drowning is supposed to be one of the most pleasant and relaxing ways to die and i feel i now know what they mean (or maybe if it werent for the anaesthetic i may feel different about this. lol). Obviously i'm still alive as you can prob tell, but when i came to a few hours later the anaesthetist came to see me and told me that if ever i have to go under again i must tell whoever the anaesthetist is i have had problems. He said they had severe trouble getting the breathing tube into my throat and when i got home i noticed i had scrathes down my arm as if i had to be held down and restrained. I'm wondering if when i went unconscious i started choking on my saliva and fighting to get breath and they had to hold me still to get tube into me, dont really know what the bodys capable of when your under, i'd imagine if you cant breathe it would still want to do something about it. Its been 5 days now nearly and my throat really really hurts still and my partner has looked in my throat and says its all cut and swollen as is the dangly bit in my throat. Just wandering if anyone else has had similar happen to them and also does anyone know what might have caused this.

Sorry about the poor layout but am in a hurry.

Thanks for any help

Hi and sorry to hear about your trouble. It sounds like you are allegic to the shot they gave you. You should find out what is was they gave you. I would call the anaesthetist and ask them what they used and whenever you need to be put under (hope you never have to) make sure they know about it. Also maybe something in your wallet that states you are allergic to this certain drug. You probably scared the daylights out of them, having a hard time getting the breathing tube in and I would never want to happen again if I were you. I have to admit, that is very scary. Good luck, Linda
