View Full Version : Mold Removal?

I recently moved into a new home where the windows get a lot of condensation on them. The result is mold in the window sills. I can't just cover them in plastic for the winter (for several reasons).

So I'm stuck trying to clean them every couple of days. We don't keep bleach in our house because it's such a nasty chemical. But it's the only thing I've ever found that really helps get rid of the mold for any period of time. I've tried lemon juice, salt and vinegar, and some other all natural mixes. Nothing seems to be helping at all.

Can anyone suggest a good, effective way to get rid of this stuff? It's making my allergies act up and my heart palpitations too.

Thanks!

How about getting a dehumidifier?

Thanks Kimmey. I will see if I can find that stuff. Glad you've found something that works!

Sannah, we do have forced air in our house (which keeps the air very dry), so the air is not the problem. It's old windows that don't handle the difference in temp between the inside and outside. If we owned the place, we'd be replacing the windows, which would solve most of the problem. But we don't own it.

OK, I tried the Simple Green and it worked very well for the surface mold. But the stuff that is deeper in the wood and metal didn't budge. So the mold keeps growing back really quickly. I like the cleaning solution over all, it's not bad. But I guess I'm still on the hunt for something strong enough to really get the sills clean. :(

The only thing I know that will kill mold well is bleach/Kilz. Use the bleach to kill the mold and then the Kilz is supposed to create a sealant to prevent the mold from coming back.

My air conditioner started leaking a while back and I didn't notice because its in a remote corner of my home. It sits on top of particle board.

I had all kinds of mold in there (and now I know why my allergies were going nuts when I was at home). I called a tech to fix my air conditioner and he stripped the particle board and put that Killz stuff down. The mold hasn't come back.

Might be worth looking into.

You might try Borax (although I don't know if it's strong enough to kill mold that's gotten deep into the wood). We had some mold cleaned from our basement and the company used borax because it's not as toxic as mold and we didn't want the entire house to be filled with chlorine fumes from bleach.

The Borax seemed to work but, again, not sure if it's strong enough to get deep into the wood.
