Does anyone know if drinking alcohol causes symptoms for flare-ups..I don't really drink much at all..maybe 3 times a year and only a drink at a time..Christmas champagne..a drink at a party, etc..and not close together at all...but I think I have noticed that I have really bad days the day after..since I drink so little and so infrequently I don't know for sure if it is alcohol...just wondering

A large proportion of FMS patients also suffer from Hypoglycemia. Alchohol and wine can cause sugar spikes, especially if consumed with a high-calorie mix (Daquiri for instance). People with hypoglycemia do much better when they avoid sugar, complex carbs, and caffeinated beverages. Not sure if this what is going on with you, but it's something to ponder.

I don't know if this is real or not... I can't believe after the experience I had last night and this morning that I would find this particular post up close to the top...
Last night, we went out with friends for dinner at an oriental buffet. After our meal, we sipped a bit of saki. I don't drink but maybe once a year, and even less since I began taking medications that advise against it. Anyway, I only had maybe 3/4 of an oz of the saki, but even before I finished sipping on that tiny little cup, I could feel that my body was beginning to ache. Then after the hour drive home, I was so stiff I had to fight to get out of the car. I ended up having the mother of all flares last night, staying up past 3:30 am. I am up at nearly noon now, still hurting. It's dulled down a lot, but man, I don't think I'll EVER drink anything alchoholic again... ever.
Is it Fibro related? I can't be sure.. but I've read a number of posts and articles that say it is, and after last night.. at least for me... alchohol affects your FMS:(

That's what I am thinking...I don't think it's the hypoglycemic thing because I am borderline diabetic plus, it is well into the next couple days and hypoglycemia would be gone as soon as I ate..and it's not really low blood sugar symptoms, it's pain and fatigue. I don't drink enough to experiment to see if is alcohol or just coincidence, but if I do have another drink I will try to pay attention the next day.

hiya kids,
thankfully alcohol is no big deal to me, drinking it that is. it does cause instant pain and weakness in my body. a couple of sips of wine is too much for my body. i get high so easily, don't like high, and it is not worth the way i feel later.
never bothered to wonder why. just assumed my body knows best and i listened.
i am not diabetic or hypogly. i attribute it to fibro for sure. i can even remember the day about 12 years ago when i had a tiny glass of my favorite, rather pricey, liqueure (sp?). now the bottle gathers dust.
peace,

I also have the same reaction if I drink alcohlol. I don't anymore. It's been years but when I did I would wake up in a terrible flare, very painful muscles, weak and just feeling sick and I'm not talking about alot of alcohol either- a drink or two and usually it would be beer that i sipped slowly. It makes sense though because alcohol causes dehydration which affects the muscles and we all know our muscles are already being effected quite enough because of the fibro. For me it just isn't worth it and now I take meds that wouldn''t mix with alcohol anyway so none for me thanks! I flare enough without it.

Sake is powerful stuff. It has an extremely high alcohol content. 3/4 of an ounce of sake has more alcohol in it than a shot of tequila.
Alcohol doesn't do anything to me except make me sleepy. I've a fondness for Cosmos and Mike's Hard Lemonade.

I have definitely noticed adverse affects from alcohol ever since I was diagnosed. Oddly enough, red wine doesn't bother me as much as any other kind of alcohol. I can generally drink a glass or two of red wine & i'm fine. Can't say that its the same for everyone though....
