How do you know the difference? Can potato chips bring on canker sores? I have only one tooth to eat on in the back of my mouth on one side (the one I always eat on) and I know that hard foods irritate my gums, Hmm, I wonder if that can bring on cankers as well????

I know if I eat potatoe chips they sometimes cut the roof of my mouth and it is real sore for a couple of days. I don't know if they can cause a canker sore but they sure can agitate one.
Take care.

Canker sores are shallow, painful sores in your mouth. They are usually red or may sometimes have a white coating over them. You might get them on the inside of your lips, the insides of your cheeks or under your tongue. Canker sores are different from fever blisters, which usually are on the outside of your lips or the corners of your mouth.
Anyone can get canker sores, but people in their teens and 20s get them more often. Canker sores may run in families, but they aren't contagious. Doctors don't know what causes canker sores, but stress may be a factor.
I would suspect that the potato chips are cutting into your skin and causes sores. Based on the description above you should be able to look inside you mouth to see if these are cancker sores or not.

It does look a little white and it was red at first, but, it doesn't look open. It's more going toward the side of my tongue. Not completely on top of it. Can a potato chip do that? Can it cause cankers? I loves chips, but, it seems like I always have problems with them. :(

I would say that yes, they could do because of the amount of salt in the chips, even being potato they contains salt and the salt could do this.

But then I heard rinsing with salt water helps. How does that help if salt is what causes them? How many can a person get at one time if they are generally a healthy person? I have 4! And a 5th one coming on! What's up with that?! I ate pickles and grapes yesterday and I wonder if that would cause them? I also ate chocolate which I'm not sure that causes them or not. Today, I eat nothing!

One other question. Do cankers spread or come on individually and how long do they last? (Okay, it was two questions) http://www.healthboards.com/ubb/gabby.gif
