Hi I am 42 and have been diagnosed with high bp,yesterday Iwent to the hospital for a checkup , foolishly I had a hangover after a xmas party, the reading was higher than previous even though Ihave lost 1.1/2 stone in the last 8 weeks and have not smoked for 4 months.Could the hangover contribute to a higher reading? Iam currently on 40mg Lispronil.Thanks.

Drinking too much alcohol over time can raise blood pressure in some people. Binge drinking is especially bad. I drink red wine and I have no more than three 5 oz glasses at one siting. It has not had any effect on my blood pressure. I take BENICAR HCT 25/40 and my average blood pressure is 110/65.

Yes. I've been there. Booze makes BP go down in the short term, but later when the body is metabolizing the alcohol (hangover stage), BP goes up. Doctors are not 100% sure why it happens, but evidence suggests it has to do with affecting blood movement to and from the heart, and it does something to the manner in which liver and kidneys function (both of which regulate blood pressure).
The good news is, your BP should go down as the hangover ends and the body finishes metabolizing the booze.
