Hello,
I am in need fo some help. I'm a usually healthy 26 year old male but about 9 days ago I noticed I had a high fever. There is NO flulike symptems, no nausia, no sickness. I don't have insurance, so I went to the free health clinic. They took a chest xray, drew blood, and took urine samples two different times. I've been there three times and they have been unable to find anything wrong with me. They gave me motrin and tylonal and told me it's prob a virus. The last time they saw me, they were shocked that it had not gone away and sent me to the emergency room - which I left because I can not afford it.
The only symptoms I have had the past 9 days are a high fever and an over

If it's really a virus, I think you need antibiotics which can only be prescribed. Does the free health clinic offer discounts on those? I know how much it sucks not to have health insurance.

Hey, I hate to tell you that if he does have a virus, he most certainly does not need antibiotics. You may or may not know that antiobiotics are totally ineffective against viruses and there is no point in taking them for a viral infection of any type.

Antibiotics are designed to kill bacteria and they are only effective against this.

If it is a viral infection, then all you can do is rest and drink plenty of fluids to replace what you loose during the fever. Also, if you feel like eating then eat small and nutritious meals that are easily digested.

Unfortunately, with viruses, you just have to sit them out and you will get better eventually.

If it is a virus, then I should just drink water and wait for it to go away? I thought that having a fever that high for that amount of extended time is very dangerous and can do serious internal harm.

If it is a virus, do a little research about raw garlic. Orthodox medicine (in general) has conditioned us in thinking there are no antibiotics for viruses. Raw garlic can make an exception to this (in some cases). One or two raw cloves mixed with food is all one needs, each day. To reduce the odor, the next day try consuming fresh or dried fruit.

As well as raw garlic, there is also the homeopathic remedy BELLADONNA that is very good for helping high fevers of sudden onset.

This is probably just a virus and especially if all your blood and urine tests checked out ok.

Unfortunately, as I said in my last post, there is not a lot that you can do for a viral infection, except sit it out and drink plenty of fluid and get plenty of rest. A fever is the body's natural response to infection and is not dangerous. A fever is caused by fever causing agents, such as bacteria and viruses and once your body has killed these off, your fever should come down to within normal limits. When infection is present in the body, the fever will rise, because bacteria and viruses are killed off by high temperatures. Once it has done this, your fever will fall naturally.

You need to drink plenty of fluids to make sure that you do not dehydrate and replace what you have lost through sweating. You also need to ensure that you eat a good, light and nutritious diet, as when you have a fever, the metabolic rate of your body will rise, so you will use up more energy.

Is this fever constant or intermittent? If it is intermittent and you have been travelling, then this could possibly indicate something such as malaria.

When you have blood tests did they do full tests? What I mean is did they measure white cell count and Sed rate? If not, then you should get these done. A raised white cell count will indicate infection and a rasied Sed rate can indicate inflammtion in the body. Both of these things can give rise to a fever, although inflammation can be present without infection, so one could be raised and one could be normal. Did they also do a CRP? C-Reactive Protein also indicates infeciton in the body. If these figures are raised, then it is likely that you have a virus as they said.

The only other thing I can think of is this.

Your temperature regulating mechanism is in the hypothalamus which is in your brain and the fact that you said that you had no other symptoms apart from fever, could mean that for some reason, your hypothalamus has re-set to a higher level, which would raise your temperature rate and give you a fever with no other symptoms.

This sounds very much like a virus, so just keep on trying the things that I have suggested. If these do not work and you still have a fever in a few days, then go back and get some more blood tests done and get properly checked out. If it does not resolve, then this may mean a visit to the ER whether you have insurance or not.

Good luck.

Sarah, thanks so much for that last post. It was the sort of information that I was looking for. Also, thanks to everyone else for your thoughts and well wishes......
we'll yesterday my fever finally broke after about 13 days! I was pessemestic at first, but it's stayed down and I'm feeling much better. My strengths going back up, so I'm hoping this will continue to progress.
So the free clinic was nice and helpful. They finally opted to do help me out and do blood tests. I gave blood to them a few days ago and went back in to get the results, expecting something like Mono or something.
We'll though they've got great hearts and were kind enough to try to help me, they messed up the blood tests, so other than confirming that I did have an infection - high level of white blood cells - they could tell me nothing else. But I'm feeling better, so I guess that's really all that matters, though it would have been nice to know what was wrong.
So hopefully this was only something like a passing virus.
Thanks again for all your help, and I'm in the process of finding health insurance!

Glad to hear you are feeling better and it is likely that it is just a viral infection and nothing more.

However, keep an eye on your condition and if you have any further relapses do go back and get tested for Mono. You are around the age when this type of illness is possible and Mono can produce high fevers too and sometimes without all the classic symptoms.

Good luck

Did you have any joint pain while you had the fever? Any rash at all?

No,
I really just had a lot of muscle aches, mainly in the neck. I had some sort of small rash on my hand about 2 months ago, which hung around for about 3weeks and then just disappeared. I don't know if it was any relation though.
