View Full Version : Wearing contacts longer than suggested?

Hello!

I've been wearing disposable contacts for 5+ years now. The box says 2 weeks before discarding them, but I've always worn mine longer. At least a month or two. My brother has the same contacts and wears them for 4 months at a time.

Recently my brand of contacts (Softique) was discontinued and I had to go into a new optometrist for a contact fitting. He seemed to make a pretty big deal about me wearing my contacts for a month (I said a month, I think it's been longer) and was quite firm that they shouldn't be worn more than 2 weeks.

My brother and I have written this off under the assumption that they are just looking for more money. We assume this because even after months the contacts feel and work fine, and have never given us problems.

Are we wrong? Does anyone have any input on this? I'm worried that I might be harming my eyes.

Any replies would be appreciated! :D

Ugh. People like yourself won't learn until you get your first corneal ulcer. Just because your contacts feel good doesn't mean they're not causing damage. Wearing your contacts too long actually deadens your corneal nerves, so you lose much of your sensitivity to pain. And unless you have a slit lamp that you can look at your own eyes with, you have no idea what kind of damage you're causing. Sadly, people still operate under the assumption that if it feels good, it must be good. Not true. You're playing a potentially vision-threatening game here and I advise you stick to the correct wearing schedule.

Also, most eye doctors will make far more money off contact lens abusers when they come in with red eyes than they will selling them contacts.

okay so along thoes lines....
im one of thoes people who havent learned... i wear my contacts way longer than i should, i sleep with them in, im really bad and have taken it for granted..... 2 mornings ago i woke up, the left side of my face drenched, my eye was watering soooo bad!! i took out my contacts and put my glasses on... ive been wearing them ever since. When i got home that day, my husband looked in my eye and saw 3 sty's in the corner near my duct.
Yesterday morning and this morning, its better.. My eye is red as hell though, and really sensitive to the light. Even typing i have to keep looking down.
So.... im an idiot... that being said, what the heck to i have??
were they just stys that were going away, or does it sound like something worse. Anyone have the same experience...

oh yeah...
take your contacts out!

wow she got banned pretty quick there.

I never worn them overnight but I use my 2 week contacts for longer, like 3 to 4 weeks. I should really stop that.
