I was told today that I had ASCUS as the result of my pap a week or so ago and that my dr wants me to come in Friday for a colposcopy. This is the first abnormal pap I've had in about 7 years. Back in 2000, after several abnormal paps, I ended up having a colposcopy, biopsy, and eventually the LEEP procedure. Since this is my first abnormal pap since then, does it seem premature to immediately have the colposcopy or is that just standard protocol since I've had a history in the past?

I think this is standard protocol especially if you also tested positive for hr hpv. If they're aware of your history, they probably also want to get on top of this asap.
You were clear for such a long time after your leep, so I assume you had clear margins and it wasn't too serious? Can I ask a personal question (please don't take this the wrong way), did you change partners? I only ask because there's a LOT of question over whether hpv can remain dormant even after long periods of undetectability, causing no problems, then coming back all of a sudden. I'm starting to think that, contrary to what is published by the CDC and other reputable health agencies, there is no real "clearance" of the virus. But I still hold out hope it's possible to truly clear it, because chasing this indefinitely isn't my idea of fun.
You sound very relaxed about this, I wish I could adopt your attitude! I hope this ASCUS pap corrects itself when you go in!

Given your history I'm sure your doctor would rather be "safe then sorry" with the colposcopy. Also, if you have HPV it is always possible for this to keep reaccuring as there is no cure for it.
Best of luck with your colposcopy. I hope all turns out well.
