Okay, I have had 4-5 canker sores come on as some of you well know from other posts that I have had. I thought of this theory as to why they could have come on. I had a can of hot cocoa mix drop on my lip (upper) and it hurt like the dickens! Well, I thought with the trauma to the mouth that brought on possibly the others. What do you all think? Lip still hurts when I push on it a little bit. Oh...Just had another thought...Can I now possibly get cold sores?

Cold sores as already mentioned are caused by the herpes simplex virus and canker sores are not. So not you would not get cold sores after having the canker sores. If you have had cold sores in the past or get exposed to the virus via kissing somewith a cold sore or sharing eating/drinking utensils then you may come down with a cold sore but you have to have the virus in order to get a cold sore.

I wasn't referring to cold sores anywhere in my post. I simply was thinking that since a heavy can had fallen and hit my lip, since trauma can cause canker sores (not cold sores)I was wondering if the trauma could have caused the canker sore that I have on that particular side inside my mouth.

Can cankers cause tenderness in the neck or jaw I wonder?

They could do. Normally you would get canker or cold sores when your body is run down and your immunity is low, so if your immunity is low, then you are more open to infection and if you get an infection, then your glands in your neck are likely to become swollen and tender, however, these should go down eventually and it is absolutely nothing to worry about. It is a perfectly normal response to the infection. The lymph glands become swollen to deal with the infection and they are doing a good job. They will go down as soon as they have dealt with this.

Sarah is right about the body being run down and being more prone to infection.

I get both cold sores and canker sores. I get the cold sores on my lip when I am sick or if I am really stressed out.
I get canker sores mostly when I get to much acid in my system from certain foods.

Take care

I don't agree about low resistance or immunity making you more prone to canker sores. Now cold sores are different. As somebody else mentioned, they're caused by the herpes simplex virus, and a cold sore outbreak might be brought on by stress, or illness, or any number of things that lower your immunity. There's a very good prescription medication out now for the treatment of cold sores... it's called Zovirax, it's available in oral or topical form. It's an anti-viral drug (the same one used for genital herpes) and in some cases it stops cold sore outbreaks forever... basically puts the virus in remission.
I sometimes get really painful canker sored on the inside of my lower lip between my lip and gum. What happens is, when I'm brushing my teeth, sometimes I do it too fast, and the toothbrush slips and gets jammed back there and cuts the inside of my lip. If I don't use tea tree oil or listerine or peroxide on the cut, it gets infected and turns into an awful canker sore; very painful.
Bacteria is present in our mouths in large quantities all the time. This is normal, and so any cut you get in your mouth is likely to become infected if you don't disinfect it and treat it properly.

I get canker sores almost on a weekly basis, I even get them on my tongue, or that might be geographic tongue, I don't know. Usually I get them as a result of an injury to my mouth, potato chips or crackers will do it. Sometimes strong toothpaste will also sting my tongue and cause it to break out. Or if I am run down I notice I get more canker sores. I am not the type that gets colds or the flu, but I always get cankers sores, and once in a great while cold sores.

Too bad with all the soreness in my mouth it doesn't help me from eating and lose weight as a result!! Wouldn't that be nice?

I've been getting canker sores for as long as I can remember and I know that they are hereditary - my mom gets them as well. They started off on the inside of my lips and I've since gotten them in my throat and on my tongue. I've recently started getting them on the top of my tongue, where I usually got them along the sides. I've had as many as 15 at one time and always have at least one. They're anywhere from the size of the head of a pin to about the size of a penny. The worst is when 2 or 3 grow together to create one big, painful one.

I've tried pretty much everything you can find in the stores and online and I have yet to find anything that works. I've just found a mouth rinse online that I ordered and hopefully it will work. God, the money I've spent on finding something that helps.

The sores make me so tired and rundown I can't even get out of bed sometimes. I am so tired of hearing that there is nothing that can be done from the doctors. Lucky me, I can't eat or drink when I have them really bad and I lose a lot of weight. I lost over 20 lbs once and considering I'm 110 lbs to begin with it wasn't a good thing. I was hospitalized and hooked up to an IV for dehydration.
