i think i have had this for eight yrs but if not then my husband gave it to me when he cheated. is it possible for HPV to be dorminant for that long? i had two premature births can that be related to my HPV? the nurse on the phone doesnt sound very worried about my condition but should i be? am i going to have this for the rest of my life? and if so will it be just as bad as it is right now? is there a chance that i could have cancer right now? my doctor is going to do the colposcopy and a biopsy. i am extremely nervous and stressed and depressed because i had no idea i had anything wrong with me.

It is very possible to have had it for that long, and nearly impossible to find out who you contracted the infection from. I have heard stories of elderly women who have been sexually inactive for years who have HPV suddenly pop back into their lives or sometimes for the first time. The virus is tricky, unpredictable, and it varies greatly from person to person. Cervical dysplasia is highly curable, even in its most advanced stages. The emotional effects this has on us women is often far worse than the physical. I have never heard of HPV causing premature births, however, this question would be best answered by your doctor. If your pap came back ASCUS, and there are infact abnormal cell changes, then it is most likely still in its dysplasia stage. There can be discrepencies from the pap to biopsy, but these discrepencies are typically within one grade. Cancer is not impossible, however it is improbable. I think our natural reaction is to hope for the best, but expect the worst. I know how scary it all can be, and I truly sympathize. The best thing you can do is try not to take too many steps ahead with your thoughts. If possible attempt to just wait & see what the results say before getting too stressed out. All the added stress will do is weaken your much needed immune system. There is no telling how this will effect the rest of your life, however, the fact that you have tested positive for high risk HPV means that you need to make sure you are diligent about getting your paps as scheduled & take care concerning your overall health. Most likely after you get treated your body will be able to effectively fight off the virus, at least to the point it is no longer causing any harm. In the event that it does reoccur, you can catch it early on while it is still treatable by making sure you are on top of your pap smears. The biopsy results will be more reliable in terms of letting you know what is going on. The waiting period is the worst. Try to keep yourself occupied if you can, and rememeber there are women always ready to listen here if you need to vent.

Hugs & best wishes!! :)

I found out 8 yrs. ago that I had high risk HPV cells. I had no idea what that even ment and noone bothered to tell me. I had a coposcipy and it was ok. My paps since have been normal. Now I ask tons of questions. My doctor said the virus can work its way out of your system. That shocked me, I thought once you had it, it was always there. But who knows. Good luck!!! The whole thing still is confusing to me!

i was in the Navy from 1999-2003 and they warned about all kinds of STDs but never tested me for HPV as far as i know, i had alot of paps in the military but once i got out i had only one 3 and half yrs ago and since then none. i just figured nothing could happen to me now that i am married, but i was wrong....

The nurse doesnt seem very worried about your condition because this is a very common std now. they even put out a vaccination which prevents this std. I wouldnt worry too much. Hpv is a virus that can be spread by any sexual contact and the doctors will tell you it may affect having children and maybe not but hey i have it and i now have an 8 month old son. So i guess it just varys from which case of hpv you have. Hpv depending on which case you have can cause cancer but not every type. If caught early you have a better chance of it not spreading but no because you have Hpv it does not mean you have cervical cancer. there are ways for the doctors to get rid of the genital warts..burning them off i think, freezing them so they wont spread..etc..anywhoo be careful with everything and Good luck
