My blood pressure, on average, is 144/90. I am 49 yrs old, 6 ft tall, 180lbs, and I exercise at my target heart rate (136-148 bpm) for 30 minutes 6 times/week. I take 600mg of Kyolic garlic capsules twice a day, 3mg melatonin once daily, 162mg/day enteric-coated aspirin (taken once nightly), 200mg selenium once daily, 160mg saw palmetto twice a day, 15 almonds once daily, and 8 oz. grape juice twice daily. My diet is also rich in fresh vegetables and fruits, seafood (shrimp, salmon) and chicken. My total cholesterol is 183mg/dL – HDL 73, LDL 101, triglycerides 45.

What more can I do to get my BP down, without going to pharmaceuticals?

Hi there,

Sorry I didn't see your post earlier, I've been travelling. You're already doing a lot of good things to stay healthy and keep your bp down. 144/90 is not bad at all. Remember the old measure used to be 100 plus your age was a guide good to systolic blood pressure. According to that you do not have high blood pressure.

It's probably due to your healthy lifestyle. However, there are a couple other things I can recommend that have helped me. First, is a modest magnesium supplement of 300 to 400 mg. This is to balance sodium levels because much of our food these days is higher in sodium than it should be. Salt itself is not really the problem, it's the imbalance you need to watch for and mg helps with this.

The second thing is slow breathing. This method almost singlehandedly keeps my bp under control. I use a method called slow breathing with music, not Resperate. I can't promote products here so search my previous posts for detailed instructions on this method.

I use something called slow breathing with music on CDs. It only takes 15 minutes a day and after a while you don't even need the CDs any more. It's really great and it helps with stress too.

I've tried dozens of natural remedies over the years and these two have really proved themselves. Keep up the good work and don't worry too much about your current bp level, unless it starts going up!

You might want to take a BP reading right after you exercise, to find out how much that process is lowering it. It's not really indicative because almost everyone's pressure will be significantly lower at that point, but if it's not dropping into a low range, you'd have something else to explore.

Given your BMI, lipids and lifestyle, I imagine a Dr. might explore secondary possibilities, otherwise, absent a history of heart disease in your family, would tell you to relax and enjoy life.
