Hi,
I am new to the health boards, hello everyone :)
I will try and make this short. I was diagnosed with severe degenerative disc disease and fibromyalgia several years ago. Then about 2-2.5 yrs. ago I started feeling worse and running low grade fevers for no apparent reason so my dr. ran blood work and they came back with elevated white blood cell count; so he figured some sort of infection and put me on antibiotics. This still did not help so I was referred to an infectious disease specialist. After several appts. and tests he finally told me that the only thing he could come up with is "cat scratch fever" and put me on stronger antibiotics for 30 days. This still did not help and on my last appt. he was like, "I don't know what is wrong with you, you are just getting older" (I am 41 yrs. old). Needless to say I did not go back to him and sort of gave up trying to find out.
About 4 months ago, I found a better family dr. About 6 months ago, I started having new symptoms, along with the old ones. I started having nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, weight loss (total now being 78 lbs.--11 lbs. in the last 3 weeks), more fatigue and weakness, itchy skin (all over), sweating at night, some bleeding with bowel movements, bloating and stomach pain (had gastro work up, colonoscopy was done & they removed small polyp), plus all this time white blood cell count still abnormally high. Have been on several courses of antibiotics.
Dr. ran another blood work up this past Tuesday and the results came back with a very high white blood cell count and very low red blood cell count. He prescribed one more course of antibiotics for 10 days and wants to repeat blood work then and said we will take it from there. I am still so nauseated I can't keep my antibiotics down so I went today and he gave me a shot of phenergan and a prescription for it.
What could all this mean? I know that diagnosis on this board is not permitted, but I just really need some opinions and someone to talk to. I would be so grateful for it!
Teresa :)

Hi there

The best advise I can give you is to find a really fantastic heamotologist (I think the spelling is right!!)

I would suggest you get an appointment as soon as possible at a large metropolitan hospital. "I don't know what is wrong with you" may be the best a doctor can offer but I would think that if that is the best answer he can give, he would refer you to someone else.

I don't know how far you are from Atlanta, but I think it would be worth it to find a hematologist who is affiliated with a good hospital.
