cindeerella29 08-03-2003, 07:19 PM I am looking for medical insurance, I want to know if I would definately qualify for medical insurance through COBRA? mishka1111 08-05-2003, 04:49 AM In order to qualify for Cobra there r a few things. If you leave your job voluntary or involuntary If you were cover under your employers insurance & an injury prevents u from coming back to work & the "employers time limit" for your coverage expires. Cobra is offered. I hope this helps, I am sure I am forgetting something. Good luck! Shaman 08-05-2003, 02:35 PM Since you are in California there are two types of COBRA regular COBRA & CAL-COBRA which is mandated by the state. You need to talk with the benefits coordinator at your job and let them know in writing that you want to take advantage of COBRA/CAL-COBRA. There are some pretty strict time limits for how long you have to inform them you want it when you leave your job. Also, be aware that they may be obligated to offer it to you, but they can legally charge you more than you were paying when you had the coverage through your employer so it can be pretty costly. mdla 08-20-2003, 02:48 AM Is there any average range for costs of Cobra? Ive heard people saying it can be from 400-900 a month that seems outrageous. zip2play 08-20-2003, 09:06 AM mdla, That $400-900 is DEFINITELY the right neighborhood with the $400 not likely! jorob 08-24-2003, 07:45 PM Hi There, Federal COBRA laws apply to groups that employe 20 or more employees. They must offer COBRA to employees that leave voluntarily or involuntarily unless for gross misconduct. An ex-employee may elect COBRA for ujp to 18 months at 102% of the premium the group pays the insurer for the coverage. Coverage costs can vary from group to group, but the group cannot charge you more than 2% for administrative costs on top of what they pay the insurer. They get this 2% because they have to bill you and in turn pay the insurer for your coverage. You are allowed COBRA up to 36 months if you are an overage dependent who lost coverage, in cases of divorce or if your spouse (was was the employee) is deceased. Hope this helps..... |
