Hi, :)
I cannot complain. I am told I am doing great and everything looks good. I will admit that's exactly what I wanted to hear. My hip is still bothering me. I guess I'd better get used to it. My meds don't need to be adjusted. I hope the blood pressure stays where it is right now. It always seems to follow the same pattern, absolutely perfect for a while, then it starts to creep up slowly but surely until my medication is increased. Right now it's behaving. Of course it was elevated at the doctors' office. I am being sent to a another doctor to deal with the stomach stuff. The medication I am on for that does not seem to be helping. I really really hate this. I don't know how people cope with having the reflux. Maybe the hernia makes it worse. I hope I won't get a choking fit tonight at the party with everyone there. I just wish it would go away.
With the appointment out of the way, I can now concentrate on my work and get ready for the holidays. I want to do some baking after all. I don't have to see my regular doctor until after New Year.
I would like to find out how much fructose from fruit is considered too much. I talked to my friend last night. Her dietitian warned her not to eat too much fruit because her glucose levels were too high already. Apparently, two oranges or apples can cause a glucose spike. I was surprised she seemed to know so much about this since she does not have diabetes. I thought I could eat as much fruit as I wanted to, the more the better. Wrong. I think it's time to learn about the glycemic index and low GI diet. Geez. My days are too short!
I hope you are doing well and remain pain-free. I wish the same to your daughter. :)

Thanks for the good wishes. Since you are a baker, can you tell me how to prevent oatmeal cookies from browning on the bottom too much without being under done on the top?
I usually only have two servings of fruit because of the sugar & I get a little gasey from fruit. There was a great article about GI prevention problems in either Prevention or Reader's digest recently.
One thing I was surprised to read was that it is best to drink one's fluid before eating to decrease bloating/gas. I remember my daughter coming home from school to tell me that her teacher said not to drink fluids while eating (part of the 7th day adventish health teachings). Perhaps it helps digestion by preventing the stomach acid from being diluted.
Also, I've been trying to chew 20 times with each bite & find it helps my stomach issues. When I recently visited my grandchildren, we were working on their counting so we counted steps etc & even how many times we chewed. They ate up their veggies so they would have to count more. :) Fam

Hi, :)
thank you for the helpful tips. Drinking water prior to and during the meal prevents us from eating too much and helps digestion and the kidneys.
I had plenty of water last night before and during the Christmas dinner at the party and only 1/2 plate of food, mostly veggies. I chose several strawberries for desert. I feel I did really well.
Would you believe I woke up this morning with another chest rash? This one is not bad at all, just a few areas of inflamed skin over the chest & upper abdomen. I am getting a little tired of these rashes. Too bad they don't have anti-rash pills for us to take!
The book about hypertension I mentioned is the very best I've seen and definitely worth the cost. I am so glad I have it! The next one on my wish list is the Color atlas of skin problems you suggested. Seems like it will come in handy.
As for the baking - ovens generate and distribute heat in different ways. Using lower heat than recommended often works. Moving the racks does also. I hope you'll get it just right before burning too many batches of cookies. :)

So glad your b/p is okay for Christmas.
When you have time, could you tell me how subjects are covered in your new b/p book. I still haven't order that $75 one. Oh, & what is the name of the book?
I have been doing so much reading for my daughter whose due date is this week. One Dr. wants to do a C-section because she had probably with the first delivery-there are so many issues. We've been on the phone a lot discussing the pro's & con's. I wish this could have been taken care of earlier as we're down to the wire now.
Thanks for the baking tips. I better pick up a new oven thermometer just to be sure.
Sounds like you did pretty well at the party. Fam

Hi, :)
I've just lost a post so have to re-type it.
The book is called Comprehensive Hypertension by a group of top international experts on hypertension. The top two listed are Gregory Y.H.Lip and John E.Hall. It costs about 200 dollars and was published this year. It has the latest information about hypertension and related research. I have never seen a book as extensively cross-referenced as this one. According to the introductory chapter, it was written for clinicians, basic and clinical scientists, population scientists and as a reference for other health care professionals. Parts of it might be difficult to read. Everything relating to hypertension is covered, including epidemiology, hemodynamics and vascular mechanisms, renal and neurohumoral mechanisms, molecular biology, genetics and lifestyle, clinical approaches, secondary hypertension, pharmacologic intervention, treatment guidelines and much more. These are just the main headings. I did a bit of selective reading and decided to start at the beginning. It is not going very fast.
I wish your daughter a safe and speedy delivery. It might turn out to be a Christmas baby!

Hi Fam,
I wonder what you think about this. I received a requisition form for labwork from the doctor I saw just before Christmas. It really scared me. As you know, I was told everything (the lab values)looked good and was OK. In addition, I am being asked to make an appointment with the same doctor. What gives? I was expecting a referral to a gastroenterologist. I really need one. I am dissapointed because it means nothing is going to be done about the reflux & LPR anytime soon and it really bothers me. I wonder if I should wait with the labwork a couple of weeks or even longer, in hopes my cholesterol and other things improve during that time. I also wonder if I should eat just fruit and veggies and nothing else.
I attempted to shop for groceries but was in no mood to read the labels. I don't know what to buy anymore anyway. I had five things in my shopping cart after about a half hour - enough for a chicken stir-fry. I gave up and ended up at the supplement & vitamin sale and then shopped for clothes. Which does not make sense, because I am hoping to lose weight. Now I feel depressed. I am glad I am going back to work tomorrow. Reflux and nausea do not make it easy though.
What do you think?

I hope I can get this through because my internet service is really having problems tonight.
Have you been off work? If so, is it the reflux stuff?
What kind of lab work is the Dr. asking for?
I would go ahead & get the labwork done & make an appointment.
It may not be as serious as you are thinking at the moment. Some Dr's want to see you for lab results; others are too busy.
Something similar has happened to me a few times. Couldn't you call his nurse & ask her what he wants?
Maybe he has some more ideas about your case.
You need to get your Gastro referral so when you see him perhaps he will get that done.
I don't think you need to go on a veggie & fruit diet. You wouldn't be able to do that all the time if that's not what you like. Moderation is the best course as far as I know. From what I understand, diet doesn't play as big a role as genetics unless you are eating fat etc way over the top.
I know it is easy to get depressed over all these issues. I do too.
I find writing in my regular journal helps as well as my gratitude journal helps put things in perspective. Dr. Laura says music helps too. For the longest time I was so caught up in the HBP stuff that I wasn't doing anything fun. I started listening to my favorite music again which I find lifts my spirits.
I know one thing for sure is that you need to pamper yourself as much as possible while going through these stressful times. Do stuff that makes you feel good. For me that would be a long, hot bath while reading a good book.
Let us know how you are doing. Fam

Fam,
I feel better already. I am still worried. The tests to be done are pretty basic, sodium and potassium, glucose plus the kidney tests I'd just had done.
Anyway, I am sorry I let it get to me and vented. I have been having some issues which I was sure were medication related. I talked to three different pharmacists today regarding my calcium channel blockers and got pretty much the same answer. Maybe I need a dosage adjustment. I experienced withdrawal symptoms several times over the last few days. It was so bad last night I almost went to ER. It's hard to tell what is an effect of a medication and what's not. I have been really anxious today and have not had this problem.
I don't want to start missing work. I plan to get the lab stuff done in a week or two on my day off. I am sure it can wait and maybe the doctor will forget about me for now. The reflux is probably the worst side effect of my medication I've had to date (except for the shortness of breath) and I hate it. I think I have LPR as well with all its nasty symptoms. People at work are aware of this (how could they not be?) and I find it extremely embarassing.
I am glad my blood pressure is good. That is the most important thing. I just have to make sure it stays that way. I thought maybe the fruit/veggie diet would help lower the glucose level over the next week or so. I wonder if it can? I called my girlfriend who is learning all about diabetes and got her to promise to help me out. I will have to wait until we can get together.
That hot bath and book will wait until tomorrow night when I'll be able to relax and enjoy them that much more. Sounds good to me! Thank you so much for caring. I have just the right book, too - you'd like it very much!!!

Hi Flower,
I am so sorry to hear that you are having problems - sounds like you think its from the CCB's that you are on.
I will pray for you - I hope you feel better soon. You are such a BRIGHT spot and contribute so much knowledge and information (as do some many others on these boards) --- I hope you can get the comfort that you need from us as you go through your difficult time.
God Bless You:angel:

... I talked to three different pharmacists today regarding my calcium channel blockers and got pretty much the same answer.
Flowergirl, for what it's worth, my ccb, norvasc, was the only one of the 5 medications I took that caused heartburn...and famnd was the one who figured that one out! Haven't had heartburn since last May which is when I stopped taking amlodipine/norvasc.
...I experienced withdrawal symptoms several times over the last few days. It was so bad last night I almost went to ER. It's hard to tell what is an effect of a medication and what's not. I have been really anxious today and have not had this problem.
Yes, if those darn side effects would start and stop when we started and stopped our medication, our health issues would be so much easier to figure out!!!! It's so difficult when the side effects start and stop at will---theirs, not ours, :(.
... I thought maybe the fruit/veggie diet would help lower the glucose level over the next week or so. I wonder if it can?
Even if it can/could, that may not be a good idea. Your doctors need to have an accurate picture of your "normal" glucose level. Eating the "right" foods for a week is, in a way, cheating, because that's not how you live. If you "cheat" the results of the test will be worthless, and may even be damaging to your health but I think you know that. Aghhhh, so why am I saying it? Do slap me with a wet noodle, would you please?:D:
Do hope you can enjoy that hot bath and book...relaxation and enjoyment sound like good medicine to me! Take care, flowergirl...you've got friends here who think the world of you, and wish you the best of health and happiness,....but I really think Vanessa said it best....

Just remembered today. Your Dr. will probably be doing the long term blood glucose test. I think it is called Ac1 which shows what your blood sugar was over about 30 days I think.
Norvasc is known for heartburn problems. I took that drug while seeing the first HBP specialist. He looked me straight in the face & said it wasn't a problem. That was the worst heartburn episode that I had had for 30 yrs. He refused to admit that it was from Norvasc. The only reason I tried Norvasc was that I had tried everything else & it is a drug that is especially good for the systolic. Fam

Thanks, everyone!
I had a pretty good day today. No chest pain, no reflux, coughing or choking. I am no longer anxious. I feel so much better without the anxiety!
All I ate were mixed veggies and some fruit and a small sandwich tonight (with home-made roast beef). The dip tasted salty, though I had not added any salt when making it. I probably should not have had it. Oh well.
Just a thought: maybe the pain I had was from lower than normal potassium & sodium levels and not connected to my use of the CCB. My CCB dosage has not changed. Why would I be having the withdrawal symptoms? I'd had those in summertime (chest pain) after my CCB dose was briefly reduced due to bad side effects.
I can foresee problems with my potassium levels. It took so long to increase my K level. Now it's down again, maybe even lower than when last tested a month ago. If I go off the Hctz, my BP is going to go crazy. I guess something will have to be figured out. That's what we have the specialists for.
I read that my CCB, Felodipine (and others) directly causes acid reflux and other problems in some people. They also cause breathing problems. I wish I did not have to take the CCBs - too late now, anyway. Thanks to that drug, I am also stuck with the PPIs it seems. If I stop taking the proton pump inhibitors, I know I won't be able to work. If am miserable on this medication, how much worse would the reflux symptoms be without it? My breathing problems could return!!!
Beth, I do not question at all the origin of my stomach problems! You saw for yourself what the medications can do to us (besides making us better?) My stomach was perfectly fine before I started taking all these drugs. I KNOW the meds are responsible. I was on Norvasc briefly before being switched to Felodipine. I think all CCBs have similar side effects. How sad they help with one problem while causing another, also requiring the use of medication. It's ridiculous.
Thanks for sharing. It's good to know others have experienced this. I think the patients should be warned of this possible side-effect before they start taking the drug.
Vanessa, thank you so much for your good wishes! As you can see, you are not alone with your problems. All of us here have some health concerns and issues, that is why we come here. It's a great place.
Fam, aren't you glad you are not taking Norvasc anymore? Did you have reflux prior to your use of this drug? Were you successful in lowering your blood pressure with Norvasc?
Thanks once again,
flowergirl

Norvasc reduced my systolic 10 points the first day. But the 2nd day my b/p was 20 points higher. Probably because my head felt like knives were being stuck all over my head constantly. The pain was really bad. I'm not prone to headaches at all unless I'm near someone smoking or from different strong smells like paint.
I made the mistake of starting Norvasc on a Friday so I couldn't get hold of the Dr. I knew between the headache & the heartburn I wasn't going to be able to make it through the weekend. So I double checked my package insert & called the pharmacist & then stopped taking the drug. The Dr. wasn't available. It took at least 3 wks before the head pain left for good. The heartburn maybe two wks.
I also forgot to mention that I got swallowing problems with Norvasc. I already have swallowing problems but this was a lot worse. I had to strickly pay attention when I ate so that I didn't choke. So I just ate soft foods until that passed.
Yes, I've had heartburn issues, reflux, & hiatal hernia since the 70's after the birth of my 10.5 lb baby. But up until taking Norvasc, I never had heartburn like Norvasc gave me. The Dr. just laughed it off-that's when I needed to see another specialist. Fam

Fam

It's sad but I don't dare to make any negative comments about my medication. I did this several times in the past and the doctor got really angry and defensive. My complaints accomplished nothing. I don't know why the doctors find it so hard to believe that even the most heavily advertised (and pricey) drugs can have serious side effects. Your experience with Norvasc was scary and so was Beth's. These are potent and addictive drugs. One cannot be too careful when using them.
I thought the swallowing issues were a symptom of LPR, which goes with the reflux, which can be caused by CCBs. It's really scary how many adverse reactions we get from our medication. Let's hope it's more beneficial than harmful.
