Hi there. I have a 17 week old son on Prevacid. He takes half of the 15mg single dose packet once a day. We mix half the packet with one tablespoon of water once a day, and I give it to him in one of those eye droppers. It's a powder that is flavored like cherries, by the way if smells. It has these little white balls in it, they look like cake decoration sprinkles, and that's the medicine in the delayed-release oral suspension......we've had no trouble with him taking it, and it seems to be working rather well for him. Along with the medicine, we switched him to Enfamil Gentlease Lipil, he used to be on Alimentum, but I don't think he was thriving on it. Maybe your DR can give you a sample of the Prevacid packs, or definately get a second opinion, and call the insurance company and complain. Good luck!

Hi there -
The acid reflux medicine we had my daughter on didn't seem to make much difference for her. It was difficult giving it to her because it had a grain texture to it at times and she was less than thrilled with it.
My little one screamed from sun up until sun down at that age from constant pain - our situation ended up being switching to a different formula (after 6 we found the right one).
If your doctor sends a notice to your insurance company, won't they cover what you need?
Good luck! I hope you find the right cure soon! :)

Have you considered switching formulas? Maybe his reflux and gas are due to the type of formula being used...just a guess. My seven month old nephew has been on zantac since one month, and the reflux has NEVER subsided. The poor child spits up constantly and cries often. I swear the kid needs to be put on a different formula, but I don't have the guts to tell my brother. My three month old daughter was put on soy at three weeks, and we have never had a problem.
Anyway, you could always ask your pediatrian if he can recommend a sample for you to try if that's something you might consider. Best of luck to you and your baby boy!! :)

My bubba, now 6 months old, was put on Zantac at 6 weeks old for silent reflux (not chucky, just acid up and down the back of this poor throat). He screamed and arced up.
I tell you, the VERY FIRST DOSE of Zantac was bliss and we have never looked back.
I have cut his dose from 3 times a day to 2 times and he is wonderful. He still chucks, but no more than a normal bubba with wind. But the pain has stopped.
Once he can pull himself up to sitting then I'll consider weaning him completely, but until then, I'm leaving it.

That's awesome that the Zantac worked for your little one. It helps DS a little, but he's still having rough days. It seems to be more bad days than good right now. :-| I wish it were bliss, I hate seeing him crying so much!

Don't forget with Zantac that it's very 'weight' based ... we noticed that as soon as bub gained weight we had to increase his dose. And when he was about 4 months old we had to up it from 2 x daily to 3 x daily. He was very sensitive to any fluctuation in his weight ... needed to up the dose.

mine is on prevacid and has been on it for a little while now maybe two months. She is fussy and cranky reguardless. She has gas it is all associated with the reflux. I don't think it is helping her as much . I started to noticed her throat being sore so she will be at the Doctors office tomorrow to figure out what to do next. She is also on the formula nutramegin. She has been on that for a while too. I find myself always worried about things associated with this. I thought that @ four months most babies eventually out grow out of it I hope yours does and mine does to. As FOR AS insurance yes, I could scream to....with out insurance it is 135xx with coverage it is 115.xx big whoopy do .I managed to get samples from the office but this week I can no longer do that because I have already used mine twice . To be honest I don't find prevacid really helped alot. I mean it did but reguardless these babies ( mine ) aren't happy. Mine cannot ever lay down on her back ( no way) not ever. She hasn't even begun to try and roll over because of this. She sleeps on her tummy ONLY. She does sleep all night long. But during the day its small naps but she has to be held most of the day.
I will see what he says tomorrow and I am telling him I want to find a GI Doctor because I have just about had enough. I hope you find a solution soon. My baby is going on four months after Christmas.

i'm a prevacid rep. the oral suspension packets you mention are not going to be available anymore - what is out in the pharmacies is all that is left. It is replaced with the Prevacid solutab - which you can easily dissolve in water in an oral syringe and squirt into the baby's mouth. It is strawberry flavored - most kids love it.
it does have the little microgranules - which is indeed the enteric coated medicine- and should not be chewed or crushed or it will lose efficacy.
the only problem with the solutab would be the does your child is on- because splitting the solutab is not an exact science- it's not made to be split - it could cause some of the granules to break open- and they are also not dispersed in the solutab evenly- so you can't really know the exact dose 1/2 a tablet is.
