As much as I love exercise and Im great at motivating others with their workouts, I just cant seem to motivate myself when I do a workout session in my local gym where I work. I use to love the gym and go on a daily basis now I think its a bore when I try and go for a workout session on my own, I dont push myself hard enough I get bored and then afterwards I am dissapointed cause I didnt feel like a did much of a workout. I still love the group fitness aerobic classes and tend to go to body step and body combat classes which I love but when it comes to doing my own workouts the motivation is non existent. I need some help as my stomach muscles are quite weak and I want to strengthen them up but I need someone who will motivate me and encourage me.
Does anyone have any ideas of what I should do ??

well, if exercising alone doesn't work for you, don't do it. I find I can lift weights well alone, but for cardio I get bored alone, so I go with a friend.
Or, you might want to work with a trainer to develop a new routine.

Are you saying you're a personal trainer of sorts? When you're at the top, who's going to train the trainers, is it lonely up there?;)
I don't think you're talking about motivating entertainment are you, like music while working out?
Are you looking for workout partner?
If you're looking for a serious challenge to motivate you, why not run if you are not already? Running is it's own world of motivation and you either do it or you fail at it. It takes a lot of will power to be able to do any distance, but once you're able to do 2-3 miles and up from there, your motivation can really take off since you feel so good about your ability and fitness at that point!

Hey thanks you two
Dont get me wrong I love exercise, I can go and do some group fitness classes easily and I love and enjoy doing them, I guess it comes with the social aspect too.
When it comes to classes such as circuit classes, bike, aqua or aerobics classes Im usually fine and I work sooo much harder than when Im working out on my own.
I might try taking up running though I have tried it in the past but then again it comes to that I run better when Im with others.
I just feel so bad because I am great at motivating others and getting them to do exercise which I do on a regular basis but when it comes to myself Im just so bored and demotivated.
Thanks for your suggestions though.

But don't we all go through this? Does anybody workout because it's fun? It's a trade off, as far as I'm concerned exercise is boring, simple as that, and once we reach our goals how do we keep going? I think the social aspect as you indicated is great, but it sounds like you need a workout partner who can challenge and motivate you. That's a tough one though if you're in great shape already as most people at the gym are typically not at your level. But more on the social aspect, I don't think it hurts to be on the look out for special friends too, i.e. love interests, as stupid as that sounds, it's true. If you're married workout with your spouse. As an example, (I'm 46 and single) I belong to the Adult Fitness program through the Health and Exercise Science department at the university of which I am an alumni. We have student interns that come through doing their 'practicum' for classes each semester and we have some longer term graduate students. The program director tries to involve students with people in the program and I've managed to hook up with a twenty something grad student that runs with me once a week, boy is she HOT!:D All right, keep it to yourself, I'm a perfect gentleman, but she repects me a lot for my routine and we have great conversations. She is plenty of motivation until she graduates next summer.;) Other than that, I just don't allow myself to be unmotivated. I just go to the gym because that's what I do, it's never a question of will I or won't I, I just do it. Trying to occupy my mind during long exercises is challenging though, hopefully/usually my mind will drift with thoughts of the days events, plans I have, friends and people I think about.

Hey thanks for your help Gib
I ended up doing a training circuit with two other trainers that I work with and it went great I havent worked out so hard for a long time. Probably since I did my fitness certificate. We are planning on doing another one again.
I also went to a class after work on Wednesday to an aqua session and I know the instructor the trainer, and she was giving me such a hard time but I really enjoyed it as it made me work really hard.
You are right I do need training partners to work out with.

I've tried going to a gym a few times, I always felt embarrassed and uncomfortable, especially when i didn't know how to use the equipment. I love doing the group classes and such but as far as lone workouts I've always been much more comfortable at home with a dvd. Maybe you could get some at home dvds to try and see if that works for you? I know I just started P90x by beach body, it's my second day and it's intense but i LOVE it! i had been using the Tae Bo workouts and i reached a plateau. It might help to make a buddy on here to kind of leave messages to motivate each other? I'd be willing to try and help you that way! good luck!
