Help me people, I just got back from the doctors and he told me my cholesterol was 550. I talked to my sister and found out it runs in our family. Can anyone give me any advice on how to bring it down. The doctor gave me some literature to read, but I want to hear from people who are actually going through this as well. To top it off I have high blood pressure as well. I really hate Mondays! Thanks

You've come to a very helpful place. Lot's of people here share your condition, if not the identical reading. Additionally, there's lots of good information on what types of treatment people have undergone as well as some inspiring stories based on lifestyle changes.

I would think your Dr. would order another blood test for you, to confirm the cholesterol # as well as check your liver and kidney functions. Depending on your age, weight and lifestyle, as well as the level of your BP, they would most likely suggest some drug therapy. For the cholesterol, most likely a statin. For the BP, probably an ACE inhibitor in conjunction with 1 or 2 other medicines.

When I got an official diagnosis a little ove a month ago that my BP and cholesterol levels were very elevated, I was very aggravated. In reality, it can provide an opportunity to avert some real health disaster that can ruin the quality of your life.

I've been able to change my diet, increase my exercise and in conjunction with medications, seen some dramatic improvement in a little over a month. Seek out all the inspiration you can to maintain a good attitude because that might help you look back on the present revelation as a real opportunity!

Please provide all your cholesterol numbers if you want good advice.

Total-Cholesterol
LDL
HDL
Triglycerides.

Heck... if your HDL is 200... you may not have any issues at all... but folks need all the numbers to give you their opinions...

Best of luck. :)

Actually my total was 571. as far as the numbers they only gave me 2.

total-571

and my blood pressure was 160/110 yesteday. The doctor asked me if I would like to diet or go on medication. I tried dieting before and my blood pressure was still high so I'm on meds now.

i believe with a little excersise and watch what you eat you would bring it down and recheck it again remember its not a diet its a lifestyle change

because if you take the t of diet = die so your not going to die but a lifestyle change

god bless

You definitely need to improve your HDL... should be above 40.

Work closely with your Doctor. 571 is extremely high. It shoould be below 200.

Ask you Doctor or his assistants what all your numbers are.

Exercise and diet are the best for lowering high BP. I was once at 160/110 when I was 32 years old. With exercise, I was able to get completely off meds.

Cholesterol, often times, is a whole different beast... and can be indifferent to exercise and diet. Diet is difficult... but should be a very strong consideration given your numbers. I found the Atkins diet to work especially well.

Best of luck. :)

Thanks for your responses, I use to exercise before I had back surgery. I've had nothing but problems since. My legs and back hurt more now than before the operation and has stopped me from exercising like before. I think I just need to figure out how to get motivated again. I think this would help tremendously.
