My girlfriend was just diagnosed with HPV and i was just wondering if anyone has information on how not to get it. I went to the dr with her but she was too scared to say that we were in a lesbian relationship. I was just wondering what steps i can take to have "safe" sex. The doctor just said wear a condom...but that doesn't work well with Lesbians. So please if anyone can help.

HPV can be transmitted through skin to skin contact, so unfortunately I don't know of any methods that can be used with two women. I do know that there are different strans of HPV and some even "clear up" on their own. I believe it's viral, so it may always remain in the body, but never show signs, never pass on and never even test positive again. I'd start by doing some serious research. If you're more comfortable talking to a doctor about your relationship then I suggest going alone and asking a bunch of questions. If you and your girlfriend have already been sexually active then I highly suggest getting tested.

You can buy latex sheets called dental dams, as a barrier.

Also, if you use toys, you should each have your own, or clean them with bleach between uses.

I'm sure there's more info out there, sorry I don't have it.

There is a new vaccine out there for HPV... I believe there are several shots you have to go back for, but it sounds like something great for you to check out! HPV is becoming VERY common... at least 1 in 4 girls have it these days, and of course even if you were not a lesbian, it's easy to get since condoms don't block everything. I would look into it... I see commercials on TV for it all the time. Sounds like your best bet! The only reason I have not received this is because I am in a long term monogamous relationship, but believe me, if anything were to ever happen... I'd like to get that vaccine because many people with HPV don't know they have it.

The HPV vaccine is mainly for those who have never been sexual active, who have never been exposed to anything.

Not really because I have hpv and my doctors still wanted me to take the vaccine because theres are so many strains of hpv it can protect you from any of the ones you dont have already.. and I'm not high risk so I would suggest the vaccine whether you have hpv already or not

i am afraid willing worker is right. the target audience for the vaccine is ages 9-26. The hope is that they catch girls BEFORE onset of sexual activity. The vaccine only prevents you from types 6, 11, 16, 18...it PREVENTS from only those 4 types but there are MANY MANY MANY strains that affect the genital area. This means that you, provided you do not have these particular strains, will be protected from those strains but not others. In otherwords, there are still other strains that cause genital warts and cervical changes that you will NOT be protected from...

as far as i know, if you are already infected with the said strains, the vaccine will do you no good.

so the doctors gave me vaccine for no reason at all? I dont understand that, because honestly I didn't want to take it in the first place but my mom and the doctor kept saying that I should cuz I thought it was just for people who dont have it too, but my doc said that it can still help protect from any of the other strains?

if you weren't infected with all 4 types (6, 11, 16, 18) and say had 1-3 of the 4 then you would have a chance of being protected by the one strain you were not infected with...

Did you doctor test you to see which strains you have? try reading the gardasil website...

They told me that I have "high risk"... so from what i have heard thats NOT the one for warts, so it could protect me from warts? I'm just kinda worried about the gardasil because i heard its a really new shot and they dont even know the long term effects yet so that freaks me out but I will try looking at the website, thanks!

I dont believe that is true from what i've heard. I don't think it can protect you from any other strain. There are many strains and you can HAVE many strains. The gardasil will protect you from a few if you don't already have one of those strains.
