I am very confused by my daughter. She turned 4 yrs old in nov. Lately she has been eating like crazy all the time and losing weight. I don't know why this is occurring but we went into the dr yesterday to have her shots done and asked the nurse to put her on their scale incase mine is wrong. She was there on nov 28th and weighed 33 and 1/2 lbs. Yesterday she was 31.8 (both times with clothes) The nurse was kinda shocked too. But just said keep an eye on it. We didn't see the dr or anything. How much is to much weight loss. I am trying to get high calorie foods and she also drinks pediasure. She has celiac disease but has been under control for over a yr now. So I know it is not that.
Any thoughts?
Thank You

Does she have malapsorption issues -- loose greasy stools? Maybe she needs digestive enzymes. Only reason I mention that is because DS has cystic fibrosis and is pancreatic insufficient and requires enzymes to digest fats and protein. But I do know of other children who don't have CF who have had stool elastase tests and have been found to need them, too.

Or, here's another thought. Is your daughter getting taller? DS is about the same age and while he hasn't gained any weight in the past 6 months, he's gained at least 2-3 inches in height. That and he's driving me nuts refusing to eat at school.

With DS I always give him the choice of snacks. On the car ride home from preschool he usually eats a couple packages of fruit snacks or some chips. I also push the juice 'cuz it doesn't seem to make him feel full and adds extra calories. I also sneak olive oil into his noodles, casseroles...

She hasn't gone through any growth spurts, My older daughter did that she is tall and thin, But not losing weight. But Her stools are pretty normal.
I'll just keep an eye on her weight, and give her more higher calorie foods. If it persists I will make an appt with the ped. Thanks for the info.

Could she be diabetic?

She was checked out a few years ago , I have a home glucose meter and checked it then and it was about 150 and higher. Then her peds office sent her to the lab and it was normal.
Haven't checked it since because she will freak out when she sees it.
She seems to be leveling off a little as long as she keeps getting the pediasures. But we'll see how it goes.
Thanks for the info

Okay this may sound weird but can be common with kids and im not sure how they get it but they do. Have you had her checked for worms? My brother ate like crazy all the sudden when he was younger and started losing weight around the same time and thats what he had. Kids play in dirt and share toys and pet animals..who knows? Have you had her thyroid checked? If she is super hyper, eating a ton and losing weight that could be it. The good news is that if either one is the case its easy to get taken care of and a load off your mind.
Hope everything goes okay
