Hello,
My question: Is there anyone out there on RYR and Niaspan?
The reason: Starting today....our physician put my husband on Niaspan 500 mg., due to muscle pains from 20 mg's. of Lipitor. The physician did not discontinue the 2 capsules of 600 mg. of RYR that he has also been taking along with the Lipitor.... with the physician's and his cardiologist's approval.
I imagine when he goes back in 4 weeks and we get the readings, if the Niaspan is working he will increase Niaspan.
Thanks......

Yes, my sister is on both red yeast rice and Niaspan. (I, on the other hand, have to take Lipitor and Niaspan). The Niaspan tends to have more of an effect on HDL and trigylcerides, while the RYR (and Lipitor) is more likely to affect LDL.
RYR is a mild, natural statin, with supposedly fewer side effects than the statins. IMO, the doc goofed by allowing him to take both RYR and Lipitor. Should have been one or the other, but not both. And may even explain his side effects...

Thanks Connie,
He had no pain at all for over a year on this regiment: 10 mg.s Lipitor and 1200 mg. RYR.
Then SHOCKER!......... this past May '07, he had a LAD blockage that was corrected by stinting. All other vessels were clear they said.
They (MD & Cardiologist) upped his Lipitor to 20mg. and left the RYR at 1200. I mentioned the RYR to both the Doctors but since they wanted his numbers to get low and stay low after the attack, they told him to stay on the RYR.
But, I felt that he was probably getting too much statin as he started experiencing muscle pain several months after the stinting. Finally, he had enough and talked to the MD, and went off of the 20mg. Lipitor for 1 week, then back when the pain subsided but, the pain returned, thus the Niaspan.
Knowing there are others out there on RYR & Niaspan, I won't worry as much.
Hopefully his numbers won't be too far off couple weeks and the Niaspan will work. He will need to be on medications for life and he is only 55. He has never been overweight and he and I have worked out for over 20 years and follow a good diet.
However, after this we are tightening the reins even more!!!!!!!!
