:( Has anyone had adverse side effects with this drug? I thought I was dying from it after only 1- 25mg dose....light headed, dizzy, chest and back pain, sleepy and general malaise.....I will never take it again after just 2- 25mg doses over 2 days...I went to the doctor for a check up feeling fine and now I feel very ill. I don't trust doctors now or the drugs they prescribe. Help, anyone else have probs with toprol xl?

I was put on Toporal 50 mg. two years ago for chest pain which reoccured after having angioplasty w/stents. Within several weeks of starting this medication I felt like bird poop on a fence post, tired all the time, no energy, with continuing pains. Another angio was done with nothing found. Up until three months ago, I started noticing an increasing amount of shortness of breath, chest pains upon awakening in the morning, and difficulty from ED (inability to maintain erections).
At that time they decreased the dosage to 25mg and had me take it PM rather than AM. Almost immediatly a marked improvement in shortness of breath occured, chest pains diminished greatly, and while still tired, not nearly to the extent as before. Unfortunatly there was no improvement with erections, which may or may not have been caused by the medication. However Viagra has taken care of that problem.
At present time I am happy with the results provided by 25mg. Vitals have changed very little from 50 mg {BP 115/75, pulse 44) to 25mg (BP 132/80, pulse 46)

Thank you so much for your reply...I really thought I was either imagining these pains or I was having a heart attack. When I called the doctor's office the nurse laughed at me and said these were normal side effects. The doctor switched me to Zestril which I have yet to fill. I want to get the two days worth of Toporal out of my system or head. I have NEVER been sick in my life and this is a real jolt to me. I am a 48 year old 100 pound female with good hdl/ldl and cholesterol and my youngest child is 9 years and I am right now a mental mess. I am truly terrifed and find myself slipping into a depression of sorts.

Normal side effects?!!? What's that suppose to mean? Tell her to take it and see how she feels. I'm taking 50mg. of Toprol. No side effects. It's not bringing my BP down low enough though. 130/90. I tried 100mg. and 75mg. Same symptoms as you. I went back to my 50mg. and am taking Prinzide with it to see if we can get it down lower. No side effects.

Hypertension meds are a real hit or miss affair. What works for one may not work for others and side affects are the same. Don't get excited over it as you will fine one that works. I've been though ateniol, atacand, norvasc, acupril, lotrel and now dilitiazem XR 240mg and 25mg hydrocolorothiazide and 5mg lexapro for anxiety. It works for me-side effects are bearly noticable and I'm calm and I can excerise my butt off.
Hang in there and ask about anxiety/depression meds (stay away from Paxil & prozac)Lexapro is very mild. Also Seeing a Cardiologist may cut down on wasted time due to meds that don't work well.

I've been going through the same symptoms on Toporal XL and my doctor seems to be ignoring my complaints. I am afraid to go off of it due to warnings about heart attacks, etc. if I do. Does anyone know how to safety go off Toporal XL. I have cut the 25 mil in half but am still having a bad time with dizziness, tireness and total lack of energy.

Don't stop taking toprol xl abruptly, it can cause a racing heart. My mom did that and ended up in the hospital. I think you are suppose to gradually reduce the dosage. Her dr. said she should have been on another bp med when stopping toprol xl.
Maybe someone else will post with the exact method you're suppose to use.

yeah I took it for like 2-3 weeks and i felt like a walking zombie and I didn't want to do anything while on it , to say nothing that it dropped my pulserate into the low 40's . They can stick those beta blockers , if you have to be on BP meds try ARB's which tend to have less side effects.

I started on 25 mg last year, and it helped me sleep better until I got used to it, (guess adrenalin was causing terminal insomnia) and then after a week upped it to fifty then a week later to 75 all the way to 100mg. got used to it and my sleeping went back to normal. lost the ability to exercise at 100 mg so I cut it back to fifty, was planning on stopping it but ended up getting real sick even tho I reduced it gradually (symptoms was headache real bad, fatigue, weakness, and general feeling like I had the flu or something.
I also developed chest pains too, so my doctor put me on lisinopril and the chest pains stopped for the longest time. but the fatigue kept getting worse and stamina in exercise reduced gradually I attributed to the torprol at first but I noticed the chest pains came back and I felt like I had the flu, fatgued short of breath etc, I went to the doctor and told him and he did a whole panel, I even had a fever when I went and didn't know it.
by the way over the years I noticed the tiredness getting worse gradually, almost so subtle that I didn't notice it right away and I wasn't on any bp meds at the time, probably the last four years I noticed a increasing lack of energy which made me think depression or thyroid, but I get hormones checked every year,
the panel showed me severely anemic, probably from 8 years of gradually heavier and heavier periods, I never made the connection. so I am not sure if the fatigue is from torprol or from the anemia so once the anemia is corrected I will have a base to compare it too.
that is why the chest pains returning, (maybe that was the cause in the first place don't know) and headaches, flu like symptoms, weakness shortness of breath, etc. and basically I haven't been able to exercise now for several weeks. I am on iron supplementation and increased iron food diet. hope it helps.

hello to all you people who are takign toprol XL...i too was taking that drug i am a 19 yr old girl who started being treated for severe hypertention and attackycardia (extreme fast heart rate always) when i was 15 yrs old i had the same problems i was tired all the time, often felt nausa, and major chest pains. in cast some dont know toprol XL is not only used to lower blood pressure but it also slows ur heart rate which could cause the chest pains because ur heart slows then jults to go back to the pace it is used to...but it IS normal effects...however Monopril 20mg depending on how high ur BP is a much better drug to take for high BP AND it will protect ur kidneys from being damaged from the hypertention. i am taking that now and it is so much better i can function properly now and im no longer tired all the time...and i havnt had a chest pain in a while.

PS. beta blockers are not always the way to go ... usually for hypertention they use ACE Inhibitors...like the monopril i mentioned.
Hope I helped and good luck to all.
