Hi ladies. I hope this is the appropriate message board to post my question on. If not, please point me in the right direction.
On December 18th I finished taking antibiotics for a UTI and, as usual (have history of UTI's), a few days later I started noticing I had symptoms of a yeast infection - itching, burning, etc - so I bought a monistat kit, 3-nightly treatments w/a tube of cream for external itching. I finished the kit last night but I don't feel better. The need to itch is driving me CRAZY!!!! Should I just buy another kit or should I call my OBGYN? Is it safe to just buy another kit and try again?
I would GREATLY appreciate ANY and ALL opinions/responses.
Thanks :)

I would contact your OBGYN. It sounds like a yeast infection, especially since you've been on a round of antibiotics. However, Monistat may not be strong enough. I had a similar issue and doctor prescribed Diflucan knocked out my yeast infection. Hope this helps! Best of luck and try your best not to scratch. It just makes it worse.

Thanks Gmp. I appreciate your advice. You're right. I probably should contact my OBGYN, I just didn't want to go through all the hassle that comes with an office visit (I have a toddler and no regular babysitter, a Gyno is not the place you want to spend the afternoon with your toddler :)), but I do need this itching to go away b/4 I go insane. Thanks again!

I have been getting yeast infections for 27 years and can truly sympathize about the itching! I now take an acidophilus capsule every day (which you can buy over the counter and should be kept in the fridge), and that has cut down on the frequency of infections significantly. Just as a preventative, I suggest you take acidophilus or eat yogurt (something without a lot of sugar, though) when you take antibiotics. My first infection was triggered by a heavy round of antibiotics and I have been fighting them ever since. If someone (like my doctor) had given me the acidophilus advice way back then, I probably would have been spared a lot of irritation! (no pun intended ;) )
Good luck!

hello. im so glad i found this because this is just what im going thru. uti, take the antibiotics, bam! yeast infection -i think i have read it may be a bacterial infection which i have never been told ne thing about from my doctor. lucky for me its the weekend...yay no doctors open! :blob_fire yeah thats me and my vag. right now. so i decided to try something while i have to wait till monday. using an icepack. yes it sounds a lil funny but so far its working. yeast infections grow b/c of heat right so i thought to turn the heatbox into an icebox. and a question to add onto this...outer labia itching~does anyone suggest a good cream ive been using vagasil but sometimes it works sometimes it burns. ouch! it usually shows up after i shave or because of a yeast infection. how about a cream to sooth chapped skin, like ud use on your legs, im scared to use that down thier. vagasil stops itching but doesnt heal the skin. so any replays would be appreciated. thanks every1

Hello Ms Mae,
I know antibiotics are causing your YI's but do you know what's causing your UTI's? After you finish a round of antibiotics and notice the itchiness starting (don't you luv that...lol) do you usually make an appt w/your OBGYN or just pick up a YI kit at the drugstore?
I think Moovie made some GREAT recommendations - the acidophilus capsule or yogurt low in sugar. I plan on trying both of them. Anything to help keep the itching at bay :). I'm not sure about any creams that would be safe to use on your labia. I love cetaphil for my dry, sensitive skin but I don't think I would use it on my labia. Have you tried an OTC YI kit that comes with a tube of cream you can apply to the outside of your vag for itching? Or maybe your OBGYN could prescribe a stronger cream that would be safe to use? It's such a sensitive area.
After my last post, I just picked up another Monistat 3-day YI treatment kit and it seemed to work. I think I've had quite a few UTI's b/c I take strong pain meds daily due to spine problems/chronic pain. I can only assume the pain meds relax my bladder a little too much .
Whatever you decide to do, I sincerely wish you the best.
Take care,

Hello,
I'm a 24 yr old female. I was treated with broad-spectrum antibiotics a year ago and have had no relief from constant irritation/itching/tingling down there since ending this treatment. There is also some thick white discharge which dries on the outside too. The symptoms only got really bad when I started taking oral contraceptives, which I have discontinued. Over the year, I have self-treated 3 times with over-the counter antifungal creams/tabs, and have had a round of Difulcan with very minimal relief. All STD/HIV/yeast cultures have all come out negative several times. I have started probiotic treatment about 2 weeks ago, and I'm taking garlic capsules. I eat very little sugar and only drink occasionally. Can anyone help me out?
Thank you,
Donna

Hi Donna,
I would recommend starting a new thread about your medical condition, asking for advice...I only recommend this b/c I think you'll get many more replies this way, and I want you to find a solution.
It sounds like you've been seeing a doctor, I'm assuming an OBGYN? What does your doctor have to say about your condition? What have they recommended? I can't imagine dealing with those symptoms for as long as you have, how have you stayed sane?
I hope to hear from you soon.
Take care,
Scrappin'

Hi Scrappinmaniac,
Thanks so much for your reply, I really appreciate it. I tried to start a new thread on the Woman's sexual health board but it said that I had already posted on the Woman's Health Board and that my thread has been discontinued? I'm not sure I understand how these forums work yet...
Regarding my condition, my doctor just said that it's likely yeast but had no further advice (she doesn't want to prescribe anything because the cultures have come up negative), and according to her, there is nothing seriously wrong with me. She just told me to continue with the alternative treatments that I've begun (though not too many have been scientifically shown to work). I just keep hoping that it will go away but nothing seems to work and I don't know where else to turn...

Donna - I think I've read posts where people have mentioned using boric acid suppositories to treat chronic yeast infections. It could also be bacterial vaginosis. Has your doctor mentioned that at all?
In addition to the advice here, I would scroll through the old yeast infection posts on this board and see what people have done. Good luck!
