Hi all -
Am having a wonderful night - praise God! I wanted to share with everyone that I truly believe certain foods help me out. I also have a strong faith in God and His healing power. : ) Dark chocolate seems to really elevate my mood and turkey is very calming to me. I noticed that eating yogurt also seems to help. Just thought I'd pass these tips on.
My thoughts and prayers are with everyone.

Well a chocolate, turkey, yogurt sandwich doesn't sound too appealing to me, but I think separately they would be pretty good! =) And you're right, there are foods that are calming and those that I notice can trigger anxiety/OCD.
One I definitely notice that can trigger OCD is caffeine. I'm not supposed to be on caffeine because I start having chest pains, but as I'm sure everyone knows, it's easier said than done because that cup of cappucino is just so good. =) Anyway, I notice caffeine, large amounts of chocolate, and sugar will cause spikes in my OCD, so I try to stay away from caffeine as much as I can and eat healthy foods like fruits and vegetables. I also notice if I smoke too much (go ahead, I can hear all the anti-smoking comments coming my way) that can raise my anxiety a bit too.
Anyone else have foods they stay away from, or foods that you find help you out?:D

Hi,
I believe chocolate gives an anti-depressant effect, and turkey and joghurt both contain tryptophan, which is involved in serotonin production.
Your reactions make perfect sense.

I have never thought about the relationship between anxiety/OCD and diet. It would be interesting to work out what common 'ingredient' all 'good' foods contain (and all 'bad' foods). Any ideas anyone?
BadMalibu: I am surprised that smoking increases your anxiety. Smoking is one of my most effective 'tools' (unless I am obsessing about cancer but that's a whole different story).

Well smoking is a stimulant, but I guess after awhile you get used to it and don't really think about it. I will say that when I'm stressed the ol' ciggy calms me down.:D

Yeah, I guess the idea of a "chocolate, yogurt and turkey sandwich" didn't sound too appealing. lol Separately, they are wonderful and calming to me. I find that after I eat fish, I also seem to have less OCD. I, of course, worry about mercury a little bit. I think I read, though, where the pros outweigh the cons and that there are certain seafood items that are better to eat than others, as far as mercury content goes.
I ran into a nutritionist who does one-on-one consulting and she knows how to increase serotonin strictly through one's diet. If I can gather up the extra cash-ola, I'm going to start working with her. I must say, though, that my behavior therapy is starting to help me. I feel like I'm seeing improvement and having less OCD moments. We worked on me not counting while I eat certain foods and eating odd numbers instead of even ones. I'm even supposed to "crush" my food to keep me from counting it. I can't ask my daughter if I have closed the garage door or not and I can't turn around in the street to double-check it. She also wants me to purposely listen to dripping water (WHICH I HATE!) in my bathroom daily for 45 mins. (I mean make the sink drip) and then journal or read. I have been having an extremely hard time trying to desensitive myself to dripping water - any suggestions here? We haven't worked on the swallowing/whole focusing on the bodily function thing yet. That should be rather interesting. I chew gum, though, and I'm fine. I guess I've trained my brain somehow to re-focus and relax. I'm doing better, though, even without the gum. I really think I'm tackling this nasty OCD bully. I found a friend who has my same swallowing obsession. She's also had the blinking obsession and the breathing obsession. It's good to find a friend who knows what I'm going through.
God bless.

Im surprised that noone knows this. This is how i deal with ocd and it stops it every single time. German Camomile, it relieves stress which means it diminishes obsessions, without fail. The downside is it makes you relaxed and at ease which can in some situations stress you out even more because you need to get things done, like work. Coffee gives you that perk in the morning that makes you want to tackle the day after you've had a horrible nights sleep, and cutting caffeine out completely doesnt stop ocd unfortunately, the secret is to get everything done that is bothering you, when your mind is less worried and troubled obsessive thoughts are less activated. My routine goes something like this. Every afternoon a few hours before I go to bed I write in my diary what I have to get done the following day and sometimes plan the following week. I get it all off my mind and plan it very simply, cramming things increases your stress so space things out realistically so you can tackle everything and still have time to relax and unwind everyday. Getting things done equates to feeling good, and feeling good is what we want, realising that you have to push through regardless of how many obsessions your having and how scattered you feel will surprisingly give you great satisfaction after your done. The trick here is the pain factor and discomfort factor.. if you train your mind to believe that good things come from difficulties, it makes it much easier to deal with obsessions. Hit the weights everyday, its a great way to reprogram that wimpy thinking that tells you you need to rest and take it easy all the time. In fact it helps you see that you are actually stronger than you think, plus it releases some great endorphins which means.. youll feel good, and feeling good equates to what? less obsessions! Never trust how you feel, how you feel should not govern your life, you can change the way you feel instantly. I check my diary and make sure that whatever i wrote on the following day i will get done no matter what... and if something comes up I realise that its a step forward anyway to getting closer to it. Obsessions arise from being unorganised, being unorganised generates stress and ocd loves stress... No that doesnt mean that you can become a hippy and live in the woods all your life lol and presto your stress is gone, because that would mean that you would be giving in to an alternative method giving up, that would make you unhappy and being unhappy would make your ocd worse. Pushing through it is the only way to go, it gets easier the more you accomplish, because you will feel better about yourself as a whole and it will reflect in all facets of you. Rules I follow religiously are, espresso on an empty stomach in the morning to release more seratonin and dopamine to boost my focus, go for a walk straight after that to induce ketosis which stimulates fat loss and increases energy levels throughout your whole day, come back have a balanced breakfast, protein, carbs, fruit juice and check my diary while I have breakfast. I try to stay away from coffee after 2-3pm. Dont eat protein rich foods at night because it stimulates your mind.. which equates to obsessions and nightmares during your sleep... and when im having difficulty sleeping I have german camomile. The proper way to make it is to bring water to the boil, pour the water over the tea bag, and cover it with a saucer immediatelyso no steam escapes, the active compound in camomile that helps you relax is volatile so it will evaporate into the air before it makes it into your system.. let it cool for 10 mins and say bye to your stress, bye to ocd and goodmorning sunshine. Never do anything strenuous or that will involve great mental effort, or ponder over things like bills and things that you need to do or get done FOR AT LEAST 5 hours before you go to bed, thats why you have a diary. Do something you look forward to every single night before bed, my favourite choice is a good video game, it helps your mind engage in something fun and clears your mind before bed. Also spices are horrible for ocd especially msg, so think twice beforer you order asian or indian food. Drink heaps of water during the day to help keep you hydrated and flush out any nasties. Ocd is something that needs to be kept in check not run away from, its like a feral animal that if left unsupervised it will knock evrything over and make a mess, keep on a leash... a very short one, and kick it lol. (By the way I say German Camomile because the other camomile actually makes obsessions worse lol, must say product of germany or made in germany on the box 'Tasty' camomile is the good one)

sorry guys... I hate to say this because i love it, but chocolate is like putting petrol on a fire for ocd. It contains phenylethylamine which has a really nasty effect on people with ocd.. it feels good at first but once it breaks down youll know about it, those obsessions will come in like mosquitoes to naked ankles. I was taking pure phenylethylamine for bodybuilding and realised this.
