Hi there, this is an odd problem I get. I seem to be quite a paranoid person, and sometimes I say stuff to myself in my head like *insert bad thing will happen here* if I dont do or check a certain thing a number of times or something, and the thoughts are usually nothing to do with what I have to do/check. I seem to give in a lot to this because it just stays in my mind and I get really tensed up until ive done it. Its basically like im scaring myself, can anyone give any advice please?

What you are describing is text book OCD. If you aren't in therapy or on medication i recommending doing at least one if not both. There are a number of workbooks you can do to start helping yourself but really you should be working with a trained psychiatrist and/or therapist who have experience handling anxiety disorders and OCD in particular.

Can fighting it by just trying to ignore it work? I told the doctor about this a while ago and he didnt seem to think I had it.

Was it your normal practitioner or a specialist? "Fighting" it can actually be one of the worst things to do depending on how you do it. If you try and "fight" the thought, specific try and either intentionally forget it or logic it away you often reinforce it because you keep thinking about it. There are definitely ways to approach OCD and manage it, but its tough to do it on your own without atleast some literature because in many ways its contrary to how we would face regular real world problems. If you were to find a description of OCD somewhere and read it, like in an encyclopedia or on a medical site, I imagine you would be amazed at how it applies to what your thinking.

OCD in particular is unwanted thoughts or feelings that you KNOW are illogical but can't seem to stop and make you uncomfortable and anxious. Some people deal with them through compulsions tht provide temporary relief but don't solve the problem in the long term. Sounds to me this is exactly what you are dealing with.

"What if" thoughts happen to just about everyone, unfortunately for people with OCD for whatever reason, there is osmething wrong with our brain chemistry that don't let us "let go" like non-OCD people can. We overeact to anxiety stimuli of certain types. Medication can help regulate it and so can a specific type of therapy clled Cognative/Behavioral Therapy which basically re-trains your brain. There is in fact evidence that over time CBT actually changes HOW your brain reacts physically, helping to aleviate your OCD.

I can't recommend enough trying to get evaluted by someone who specializes in these types of disorders, they will be able to tell you much more and help you set up some effective therapies to manage it.

I mentioned to a local Doctor at the local clinic about it a while ago. I'm not sure if I told him the ''scaring myself thoughts'' though but I may have, it was a while ago so I cant remember. I notice I am quite a paranoid person, and get paranoid/anxious over things most people I know wouldnt. Ive been under a lot of stress recently too about my future, im 19, and to be honest, this OCD stuff scares me. Ive been having the symptons for about 7 years, I once watched this program 7 years ago on a local murderer that was around years and years ago and it scared me too death, I had to take a week off school because I was so shook up by it, maybe this triggered it? I think it may of got better over the years though, sometimes when I ''threaten'' myself or just plain have the tendency to do/check things I can just say ''scr*w it'' and try my best to take my mind off it, it works sometimes. It seems like paranoia plays a big part in why I get like this.
