View Full Version : How to perform Dumbbell Deadlift exercise

Hi,

I was searching online for an exercise, that is performed with Dumbbells, to strength my weak lower back. I have found the Dumbbell Deadlift exercise, but I found 2 version of it online. One that looks like a leg exercises and one looks like a back exercise, I don't know which one I should do.
Any advice?

Deadlifts actually work both the legs and the lower back. The Stiff Leg Dead Lift (no bending at the knees) puts more focus on the lower back and glutes. The standard dead lift (bending the knees more like a squat) puts more focus on the legs. If you want to hit the lower back more, try the Stiff Leg Dead Lift and Good Mornings and be VERY careful about your form. Hope that helps. :)

Yes I just did it and the one should be careful. Thanks for your help and I just want let you know about my condition. Do you remember when I posted about using weights for my dislocated left shoulder to make it more stable and stronger? I used 9 pounds dumbells set now I'm using 14 pounds set and I'm feeling strong, although I can't do all the shoulder exercises using that weight but I do my best :D.

I have been told that I can use Dumbells while doing basic Ab chrunches, is that safe for my back? how much weight should I use?

It's plenty safe, it just adds more resistance. How much to use is up to you. You should still be able to do 20 reps per set or so.

Thanks for your great help and support :). 2 more question, Is there any other Abs exercises that I can perform using dumbells?
Can I perform dumbells chest exercises without a bench, just no the floor?

Any crunch/twist variation can use additional weight. A decline bench will increase the resistance as well.

As for presses on the floor, you *can* do it, but it limits your range of motion pretty significantly. When you can't drop your elbows any further than parallel, you're missing out on an important part of the movement. If you have anything to lift you off the ground even a few extra inches, it will help.

I see, what about push-ups as a way to build up the chest muscles? I know that I can't do many pushups becuase of my dislocated shoulder, but I'm getting stronger and also I can start doing it while my knees on the floor. I can't get a bench and I can't go to Gym (actually I don't like gyms). What do you think?

That should be fine. You also have the option of pressing against a wall or pretty much anything else you can lean on.

Ok great thanks for your great help, one more thing if you don't mind. I do roll-up ab exercise, can I use something light 5 pounds dumbbell (or a bar) with this exercise? or it hurts the back? should I wait to build a strong lower back first?

It shouldn't hurt your back unless you have a herniated disc or some other major injury. All the focus of crunches is on the abdominal muscles so all the back does it support and curve. You should have a balance of posterior and anterior core strength in general, but huting your back while doing ab exercises isn't very likely.
