hi everyone, my dd turns 4 tomorrow, at her 3 and a half yr check they found that she had a loud heart murmur. As it wasnt there when she was born she has to have it checked out and she is due to have her first appointment with the pedeatric cardiologists on the 14th and i just cant help but freak out about it the closer it gets. I know murmurs are very common and most of the time no cause for concern but i'm still anxious.
I'm wondering if anyone has any advice on how deal with all the worry?:(

hello...I have a daughter that is 2 1/2 now and was born with 3 holes in her heart...detected with a murmur a day after birth. Two were "moderate" in size and it was iffy about surgery BUT with close monitoring and some oral lasix we were able to manage it until they got smaller...not sure if this helps because your child is a little older with the onset of the murmur. It is very scary when you worry about the heart because it's our life source....What I discovered is that once a problem is detected there are so many wonderful advances in medicine concerning the heart....any other symptoms with that murmur? Hope you get a good report...god bless.

hi evelyn and thanks for your reply, what worries me the most is that when it was first picked up they said it was a slight murmur, but then when we had another checkup a couple of months later they said it was a loud and obvious murmur she doesnt show any real danger signs (blue lips n such) but she does get out of breath very easily. You say your daughter had 3 holes, how is she now shes older? does she still show danger signs? do they monitor her closely? sorry for all the q's lol Mia's appt is a week today :(

My first and only son was diagnosed with a heart problem when he was 8 days old. We ended up in a major children's hospital intensive care unit for 2 weeks. It totally sucked and I am convinced that the stress level of the whole experience shaved a good 20 years off my life expectancy.
My son is now almost 4 months old and seemingly doing well. He in on some scary drugs because the regular ones didn't work for him. All we can do is hope and pray that he outgrows this thing and that surgery won't be necessary.
Your original question was how do we deal with the worry. Well, everybody is different, but I gave mine up to God. I decided that all I can do is breast feed my son for as long as I can, take him to the best cardiologists and the rest is up to God. Its tough, but what else are we supposed to do? The worry will literally eat you alive otherwise.
I am truly sorry you are going through this, I know how awful it is. Good luck and have faith in God. Hang in there.

Howdy!!!
Dan is fat and sassy these days!!! He is just learning he can shriek for the thrill of hearing his own voice, so thats a hoot!
Our last visit to the cardiologist was very low key. The doc had to up the flecainide, tho, because the inderol is tearing up Dan's stomach. He was retching and heaving, not just spitting up. So now we take more flecainide and less inderol. It seems to have helped.
We haven't been able to detect an episode of SVT since we've been home from Children's, so thats good. He is a lot of work with this heart thing, but we sure do adore him!!
