1. Whenever I eat anything I start to choke after the 2nd or 3rd bite. No matter how much I chew the food.

2. Usually I have to go upchuck just to get rid of whatever is choking me. Then comes up an unbelievable amt of mucus. Like it was just sitting there waiting to choke me.
this is so awful because then I look as if I have been throwing up. And if we are at a restaurant, well, you know people think you are bulemic.

3. And lately I have a post nasal drip that is driving me bonkers.

4. Also, I have heart burn constantly. this is kind of new for me. I am drinking alka seltzer three times a day. Chewing gum and mints helps the feeling of heart burn go away. I sleep ok at night so far.

5. About once a month I get pains in my back, chest, jaw and teeth that feels like a heart attack. After about 10 mins it goes away.

What is wrong with me, doc?
So, anyone with these symptoms? the choking is the worst.

Hey golfhat,
You certainly seem to have GERD, the heart attack symptoms, <removed>. But the choking bit would worry me, a doctor told me i should be checked for a thing called achalasia, i think it is when the stomach muscles are not working properly, but you would have to check that i dont really know exactly what it is.
But good luck with it.

Hi Golfhat,

Yep, you have gerd. But the heart attack feeling, could be you are having esophageal spasms. As for the achalasia, it means you can't or have a hard time swallowing. I have achalasia, when they did the endoscopy, it revealed that I had no motility in the esophagus, meaning that the 3 muscles that push the food down do not work. So I now eat soft foods, no meat as it always got stuck. Been to the ER a few times to have it removed.

There are a few solutions to the problems, you can have your esophagus dialated, that is where they put a ballon like thing down your esophagus, as for the spasms, I am not sure of anything they do except for botox. I am reluctant to do that, although the pain sometimes is excruciating. I will eat soda crackers while I am having an attack, it seems to sooth the esophagus.
I also use Gaviscon tablets for the acid reflux and drink water as it seems to neutralize the acids. I also take Prevacid which does help, but not completely.

I hope you all get some help, I know how bad this stuff is.

Sunny
