We are considering purchasing a home which the previous owners had two cats. My husband is allergic to cats and he has asthma. We are prepared to remove all of the carpet, pads and window treatments, get the ducts cleaned and then wash the walls, floors, moldings and fixtures before moving in. Do you think this will rid the house of the cat dander? What do you know about duct cleaning as it relates to this?

Be sure to check with your duct cleaning company about how they do the cleaning. If not done properly, "left overs" can be blown into the house for up to two weeks after cleaning. They need to wipe the ducts down with a special device after the cleaning. You might also want to put filters over all the ducts - you can buy the material at the hardware store and cut it to fit.
