View Full Version : Really nervous about 5 hr GTT test

I think I could handle a 3 hour test because I tend to start feeling like I'm going to black out by 3 hours. I've read on some posts that if you start feeling that way they give you soda and milk, but I"m lactose intolerant and can't drink milk. So now I'm not only nervous about how sick I'm going to feel after 3 hours, but also feeling sick if they try and give me milk. Would they stop the test altogether if your blood sugar drops really low before the test is over?

Tigger,
I'm guessing you're having the 5-hour GTT to diagnose hypoglycemia? Well, if your blood sugar goes that low after 3 hours, they'll have their diagnosis, and they'll treat you for the low blood sugar. Just tell them you can't have milk product. They can give you some soda and a peanut butter sandwich, or a tuna sandwich, or something else with protein.

I've been in the hospital 3 times for extreme hypoglycemia due to insulin shock, and they've never given me milk...usually it's a sandwich (that's after they pumped me with glucose through an IV).

So, don't worry about it...just get the test done so you'll know what you're dealing with and then you'll be able to treat it with the appropriate diet.

Good luck!

I've also been in the hospital for low blood sugar and never been given milk- IV glucose, soda, and crackers.

Yes, I'm being tested for hypoglycemia. I get dizzy and anxious if I go more than 2-3 hours without food. The test is being given at my doctor's office, so they won't have food. Hopefully I won't pass out and have to go to the hospital. Others have said the test is a waste of time if you already know you're hypoglycemic, but I think unless it's documented, I don't feel I can accurately guess what the problem is. What do you guys think?

Tigger,
Most people don't pass out until their blood sugar gets SERIOUSLY low, like in the 20's. That's unlikely to happen. You probably start feeling symptoms around 65-70, and feel seriously crappy if you get to the 50's, but you'll be fully conscious and able to let them know how you're feeling.

This may not be the most pleasant test you'll ever have, but trust me on this...it's truly not all that bad. Worst part is drinking the sickeningly sweet stuff!

Ruth
