I would be interested in what each of you feel is of more importance in controlling your GERD/LPR symtoms. I have both but seem to suffer from LPR more. Not going to dare ask for cure because I don't believe there is one but can you tell if you do or follow a diet that helps with your symptoms more so than when you don't.

I try to avoid milk and chocolate. Though it seems almost impossible to do. Both of these cause me problems with LPR. I love chocolate and can't stop eating it and milk is in everything so it's very difficult.

The only thing that seems to make my symptoms worse is soda. Other than that I have not found anything that consistently makes me worse.

Anything deep fried -- like french fries, cheese poppers etc. Coffee and tea also affect me. I don't seem to have much of a problem with milk or a bit of chocolate, so I'm happy about that!

Why is it everything good to eat is bad:(:(?? I guess everything I enjoy effects me because I have this acid all day everyday since May. Some hours are worse then others. Today has been a nightmare.. Lpr is the pits I have to say sometimes water gives me a problem so I guess everything I eat or drink effects me:(

Thanks for all the great answers. Have to admit that water comes back up on me sometimes. In fact, even sucking on a hard piece of candy causes something to go on in my throat. Is that connected to my digestive system. It must be screwed. I'd also be interested in other things besides diet that you think helps avoid reflux. What about eating late? I've always been told that but can't see what difference it makes when I reflux standing straight up.
I have more problems with the LPR but do have food come back up, which I contribute that part to GERD. Just ate lunch that consisted of green beans, carrots and jello. Feels like my sinus is full and the need to cough. And this is on a good diet!

I had the scratchy feeling in throat /runny eyes reaction again today after walking into an enclosed area with some chemical residue in the air. (Paint, bleach, cleaner -don't know what it was) My throat started acting up immediately, resulting in teary eyes within just seconds. I wonder if chemical fumes can aggravate the LPR or the reflux?

I had lump in throat from April through October 2007 almost 24/7 along with 'searing' sensitivity throughout the esophageal area, but NEVER with actual heartburn. Have been on 40 mg nexium (after a few months on Prevacid) for about 4 months and the 'lump in throat' is completely gone along with the extreme discomfort/sensitivity in my esophageal area. Now I'm left with a 'searing sensitivity/discomfort' in my THROAT (not an actual soreness) and even worse in my nasal membrane. The feeling is similar to sinusitis, but I feel the 'searing' acid there. Basically its a lot better now than with the 'lump in the throat' which was horrible (almost missed my son's graduation in Mid-April, but hobbled along medicated).

Looks like the acid reflux has climbed upwards effecting the throat/nasal area now and I wonder where it goes from there. I've made an appointment with an ENT and greatly suspect LPR and not the GERD I thought I had. I'm afraid to consider stopping the NEXIUM at this time. I had an endoscopy that showed as completely normal but the doctor attributed the findings to healing as a result of the Nexium.

It does not matter what I eat. I get in on an empty stomach or after a restaurant meal. I never eat bad food anyhow. I get the throat/nose discomfort during workouts, but I persist until the end. There doesn't seem to be any trigger at all that can be established for the onset of this feeling.

I am eating even better now and sticking with fish, fruits, vegetables and yogurt products. I make pancakes in the morning but steer clear of sugar, alcohol and red meat. The only meat I eat is an occasional lamp chop or tenderloin steak (i.e. about 9 oz). I am athletically inclined so I can't very well make any lifestyle changes. I've moved my biking indoors (stationary bike) and I've stopped playing tennis because of this LPR otherwise I'm coping as best as I can. I work from home and I know that makes my life relatively easier than some of you that must work outside the home. Reading this forum helps me cope and I appreciate all the contributions of the members.

I seem to have chronic sinus infections along with all the other "chronic" things I have. I know my sinus issues have got to be related to the LPR because it's always after I eat. My Dr. says the acid swells the mucus membrans in your voice box and sinus. I also have reactions to chemicals and things in the air whereas I never did before. My voice has been so bad (again) and I'm coughing up yucky, thick, mucus. Know the irritation to my vocal cords can't be good for them but nothing is helping. My husband had a heart attack on Wed and I immediately started coughing, chocking and my voice sounds awful. Strees is a BIG factor. He's to have open heart surgery early Monday so I came home to get some things and try to rest. I'll need all my strength for him. Worried about him and fighting that Dallas traffic yesterday had me feeling like I was having a heart attack. I'll try to get up some free medical advise while at the hospital and please keep us in your thoughts.

Charla,

Sorry to hear about your hubby. I hope all goes well and that your symptoms won't bother you too much during these extremely stressful times.
I can't believe how many symptoms we have in common. I started being overly sensitive to chemicals in the air just recently. They had never bothered me before. When I smell a chemical, the lump in the throat becomes instantly irritated, causing my eyes to water and setting off a coughing fit. Another new symptom is my earache/ lump-in-the-throat ache when i swallow. My sinuses are getting clogged up, to the extent that I can feel it. I am certain I have most of the LPR symptoms. I sure wish I didn't.

Best of luck,
flowergirl

I woke up feeling that stuff in my throat. It's awful. I know this is stress related since I've been eating hospital food from the cafeteria there, which is quite good food and I've been making wise choices to try and stay well. I thought once I might have chemicals that I was allergic to (like all of them) My daughter says I clean too much and use a lot of products but I feel it's still coming from my stomach. Either upward or downward. My ears have been so plugged my SIL asked today wasn't I going to answer the phone. Never heard it.

What get's me is that a lot of Dr's I've mentioned LPR to still don't seem to know what I'm talking about. I was telling one of my problems. I know they have their own spec but this was a surgeon! He knew fundo, of course but that's a whole new ball game with a little of all symtoms thrown together.

They say people with LPR have weak UES while GERD people have lower LES. If it's acid it's got to be going above the lower sphinter and the upper! Yet, no one seems to know why this happens to some and not others. I read and study it all the time but have lost faith in surgery and can't see myself following every single rule the rest of my life and especially when I never know if it's going to happen at that time. I only worry about it getting worse and worse and I'm ready to file for disability now. Does your sinus seem to drain all the time. Back to that left right thing. My right does but not my left. Knot in my throat is on right side too. I feel like I must sniff up hard then clear my throat to be able to talk at all. I also noticing if I talk a long time, I get very SOB. Last allergy tests were fine and even lung test. Seems no matter what season or location. Believe me, I've kept journals on what I've eaten, drinkin, time of day symptoms get worse. Even thought I'd made it a habit tick but can't be. Just can't when after coughing fit something comes flying out of my throat.

They can take a man's heart out and plug it all back up but can't figure out how to help us digest food and keep it in it's right place.

Hi,

What get's me is that a lot of Dr's I've mentioned LPR to still don't seem to know what I'm talking about. I was telling one of my problems. I know they have their own spec but this was a surgeon! He knew fundo, of course but that's a whole new ball game with a little of all symtoms thrown together.

My doctor told me that once damaged, the valve gets worse. He also said some function is lost with age. I suppose that makes sense, like so many other things. I have a question: Is there anything we can do for our LPR symptoms? Is LPR an extension of GERD? Does one exist because of the other? In theory, does the GERD treatment (if successful - mine does not seem to be-) also help with the LPR symptoms? Can a hiatal hernia make the symptoms worse? I have not done any reading about LPR and know close to nothing about it. Time to change that!

Do you find writing in your journals helpful? Do you sometimes go back in time and re-read some of the entries? I am wondering if I should start doing the same.

Charla, the sinus thing is worst after I go to bed (thank goodness!!!!) My eyes start watering like crazy. While that is happening, I feel compelled to swallow repeatedly. Then the tears/liquid/whatever also gets into my nose and stays high up. It does not come out.
As to what actually goes down the throat (while I am doing all the swallowing) I don't know. I don't know if I am swallowing my tears, saliva or something else. The left ear is still achy. However, I can swallow without pain again. My nausea was especially bad today and I feared I'd vomit. I even thought of leaving work and going home to bed. (Didn't). I hope you are doing OK.

Mamasan,

I beginning to think, its not sleeping flat-
I just ordered one of those wedges that goes under your mattress, I am hoping:)

I will be getting one also but don't know when. My girlfriend promised to buy me one at a medical supply place next time she goes. I don't know how long I'll have to wait for mine. I hope they will help us. Do you have a wedge pillow? I am also getting one of those.

The one problem I fore see, is that I'm a side sleeper only, and have a very bad back.
I have been trying to test this out for the last week or so, by sleeping with a pillow propping up my chest. And I have noticed a slight improvement in my throat in the morning. Its not quite as sore-
But the- big BUT- is that my back is killing me today.
I did order a wedge to put under my mattress, but my back does NOT seem to like this:(
I feel like I can't win:(

Ahhhh, what next in the onward battle against reflux~

Mamasan,

There's only ONE way I can think of to find out whether or not taking these measures will work for us!
If they don't, we'll be out a few bucks. If they do, we'll be waking up happy and well rested! I wish us luck.....

Hi Fruitfan,
I have very bad breathing issues from the reflux. I am 35 and feel like i am 90. I just want to get better anlreagy and the ppi's are not working. Can you tell me more about this juice.

That "miracle juice" looks like another hoax to make a lot of money on the pain and frustration of others. They want you to become a "distributor" of this miracle juice that retails for $25 a bottle. The last scheme I encountered was a tile installer that had a sideline distributing a $40 bottle of Brazilian juice which was supposed to regenerate your cells and have other enormous health benefits. He gave us a bottle gratis, which tasted like prune juice, and we ended up throwing it out after a month in the refrigerator. I would not be wasting money on 'miracle' cures such as this.

I'm going to take a shot at this although it might get me in trouble. Is the juice from a fruit in Asia? I took the ***** juice and thought it helped but got off because it was expensive so had to choose med or miracle juice. You get the picture. Well, when I went to my Dr. last Wed, he said "get back on that juice you were on." He said I was much better at my regular appt when I was drinking the *****. He was skepitcal but that was his exact words at last appt. I know I'm having bad symptoms now because of stress with my husband in hospital but once we get home, I'm going to order some more. If I can get off of 3 meds, it's well worth the price.

I bought one of those expensive wedge pillows but kept falling off of it. It just wasn't comfortable to me at all. My Dr. says NOT to just sleep with a bunch of pillows piled up because it could put you in a position that would make you reflux easy. Personally, I can sleep pretty good and not have reflux. Maybe because more LPR, which I get upright. But, I have had those awful spells where I wake up with all that acid in my throat. I'm more prone to sleep on my right side too.

Charla, as you can imagine a lot of folks here would like to hear how well this juice works in the long run. I hope you will let us know. I think we all know which juice you are talking about, it's been in the news a lot. Supposedly, the fruit is extremely healthy, but so are cheaper cranberries and other berries. I know the juice is costly, I have inquired. I had a chance to buy some and decided not to. (for now).

Flower girl,
I certainly will let everyone know if I find something that will work! I drank it for about 2 months before when I started it (couple bottles given to me too) but I was always afraid of stopping my Nexium so didn't re-order. But, I get to thinking what's the point of paying for Nexium, sinus meds, asthma/allergy and all the OTC cures I try if they don't work anyway?

I know that I seemed to begin to get more energy and yes, Chalapu, it must have helped with my breathing because I actually got up at 5:30 or 6 am and took all of my dogs walking. I don't really remember what my Dr. said at the appt I went to when I was taking the juice but apparently, I must have been breathing better, not coughing and my voice must have been good the way he acted last week.

I talked to my sister who lives in Bancock and she said it was very popular and well known there. I'm down to voodo, witch Dr's, roots and berries. Anything to give me my life back!
