Hi everyone,

My 8 month old son was seen by a pediatric allergist today, and we determined that he is highly allergic to milk (he can't have dairy or milk proteins). Myself and my husband are obviously upset about this, and one of the things that came up in conversation was his birthday cake. Has anybody ever heard of birthday cakes without milk or dairy in them? I wonder if there might anywhere that makes them with soy or something? Any ideas? I guess there's a possibility that he'll be grown out of it in 4 months, but the allergist recommended we don't give him any for a year, when we'll do more testing.

I happened to hear the authors of a vegan cookbook on the radio yesterday say that you can pretty much substitute soy milk for cow's milk in just about any recipe (and substitute vegetable oil for butter in many of them) - you might have to make it from scratch rather than buying a mix that has milk powder in it - I think any vegan cookbook would probably have a recipe you could use.

What a great idea! I'll look into getting a vegan cook book. Thanks for the reply!

I had to substitute everything when my daughter had severe food allergies. You can actually substitute water for milk believe it or not. Oil doesn't substitute exactly for butter. The conversion is 25% less oil than butter (1 cup of oil = 1 1/4 cup of butter).

I have a recipe for a milk free cake if you still need it.

Yes, that would be great! I could definitely use it.

P.S. Is there any dairy in it at all? Because my ds is allergic to milk protein, which includes all milk and dairy products.

ok here is the cake recipe and if you need any other ones let me know my sister and 2 of her kids and my dad are allergic to milk. THIS HAS NOOOOO MILK products!!!

3 cups of flour
2 cups of sugar
6 TBS of cocoa
2 tsp baking soda
1 tsp salt
sift all of these together a few times
then mix with
3/4 cup cooking oil
2 TBS of vinegar
2 tsp vanilla
2 cupswater
grease and flour a pan
bake on 350 for 25-30 minutes in a 9X13 pan

There are frostings at the store that do not have milk in them. Also just so you know there are milk free cheeses or so you think but they actually have casien in them so if you are very sensitive then you cant have them.

Hi, I know it's been several months now;but...both of my children had/have this same milk protein allergy. Most children/people allergic to milk are also allergic to Soy milk. Mine drink something called Rice Dream or Rice Beverage, and I cook with it. I too was told that my babies would outgrow it; they are now 9 and 4, and I'm still waiting for them to outgrow it.

Thanks for the replies!
HHJ--I've actually recently read that people who are allergic to milk protein are often allergic to soy, and this has me really concerned! I am still breastfeeding him but in the past have given him a few bottles of soy formula, which he drank with no problems. Well I gave him a couple bottles of the same soy formula a couple weeks ago, and he wasn't able to keep it down! I hope he hasn't developed an allergy to soy as well... I will really be at a loss of what to give him if he can't have the soy formula, as his doctor said that was what I should give him after I'm not breastfeeding anymore, until he's 2. He's now almost 1 and I was really looking forward to weaning him around this age (for a few different reasons). So, I'm not sure what I'll do about this!

I recommend Almond Milk and/or Rice Dream , it is a lil costly - but what a difference in our lives.
My eight year was first diagnosed milk allergy, we moved to soy. Then Test results came back soy allergy as well. Almond and rice are commonly used in our household. We are all on the program.

Also, many supplement are available for immune boosters - Nutren - Life Start and 4 Life

I wish you all well - DJC1008

I've used that cake recipe myself. It's called "Wacky Cake". lol
It's actually not bad!
I've also found that Western Family Chocolate Chips have no dairy in them. And they're cheap, yay!
I can't have dairy or egg, and I've found that searching online for vegan recipes is the best way to find substitutes. There are some really good ones out there.
