View Full Version : Weaning from the bottle - a couple of questions?

My son is 14 months and he has been doing rather well weaning off the bottle. I have been working on it for about 2 months.

My concern is that he is not getting enough milk now that is he drinking from a cup. He sips his cups here and there but he won't sit and drink an entire cup of milk. I am lucky if I can get him to drink 5 ounces of milk in an entire day. Is this normal? Will it just take him time to get used to his cups? Will he start to drink more?

Today, since he didn't drink much all day long, I gave him a 7 oz. bottle after dinner this evening just so he had some milk in him. I don't like doing this but I am concerned about his intake.

Also, how much milk should a 14 month old have a day? He does get cheese and sometimes yogurt during the day so he is getting calcium that way, but I still think he needs his milk.

Thanks in advance.

Kelto, calcium is calcium. If he is getting enough with cheese and yogurt I wouldn't worry about it. My one daughter doesn't like milk but she loves cheese and yogurt so this is how she gets her calcium.

I agree with Sannah. Also, since he's somewhat off the bottle, I assume he is probably eating more foods. Thus, he is not as dependant on the bottle for his primary source of filling up.
All you can do is offer him milk in a cup along with his meals. I too had a daughter that stopped drinking milk the day the bottle was taken away.
You can mention this at his next check-up and see what the doc says.
