View Full Version : Swallowing problems

I've had transient swallowing problems for quite a number of months now. Sometimes it is not a problem, then other times it is. For a while it was quite mild but for the last week I've had swallowing problems with every meal. It seems like food like potatoes, bread, raisins, almonds and whatever seem to get stuck near the adams apple on the right side of the throat.

I just had a stomach bug the other day, recovering now, and the problem is much worse at the moment. Could this be a GERD problem, which has become temporarily worse because of the stomach bug?

This is making me anxious to eat/swallow food! Which just makes the thing worse again!

Swallowing problems seem to be a universal symptom here. Have you had any tests done? I have the same problem with bread. I don't know what it is about it that makes it harder to swallow than other foods.

Hang in there!

Its my only symptom and it comes and goes....I have no problem swallowing my horse pill vitamins in the morning. Certain foods give me a problem. Steak is no problem but salads seem to be. Its a pain because I love salad

You should get this checked. Ask for an endoscopy. I started experiencing reflux and some painful swallowing in September. Never had problems before. I insisted on an endoscopy, as my Dad had had these symptoms and it turned out to be very serious. In my case, it was "luckily" a hiatial hernia, causing GERD. I am now on Nexium and do feel better most days. You should know what you're dealing with so hopefully you can get proper treatment.

I did get an endo in October of 06 and they found absolutely nothing wrong with me. I think alot of it is nerves...I hope your dad is going to be ok

Hi Mskubic

Glad to hear you had an endoscopy it that it was clear. So was mine, except for finding the small hiatial hernia.
My Dad was not so lucky. His problem ended up being a cancerous tumour in his esophagus and he passed away after 6 months. My acid problems started a few months after his passing. Never, ever had a problem before. Weird. My doctor thinks I had the mall hiatial hernia all along, but the stress of dealing with my Dad's illness caused more acid to be produced and now I'm feeling actual symptoms. I know first hand how important it is to be on top of this problem. I've really tried to change my diet (no citrus, no tomatos, no chips, a decaf coffee only once in awhile), and exercise more, and take my Nexium. I'm still hoping to get off the Nexium one day and be back to normal.
