View Full Version : Can asthma meds make it worse??

I have spent a lot of time lately reading all these posts.

I am 33 year old female - had chilldhood asthma until the age of 7 and then at 28 was diagnosed with miled asthma (at the same time I was put on Verapamil (a calcium channel blocker) for HBP that caused me chest tightness and SOB). I had a pulmonary function test done that came back normal but my Dr. started me on Intal and gave me an Albuterol rescue inhaler.

Also switched my HBP medication to Toprol XL (a beta blocker). About 1 1/2 years ago was switched to Flovent 2 puffs once per day.

My asthma NEVER bothered me - I think I had to use my rescue inhaler like 3 times in 4 years. Well in October I began having tightness and SOB almost constantly - went to see a Pulmonologist and gave me another PFT - came back normal - no scarring and no impairment but due to my symptoms - increased my Flovent to 2 puffs twice per day. At this point Albuterol would not help with the tightness?????

Did not really help - at the same time put me on Prilosec for GERD and thought some of the tightness mught be a hiatal hernia. The prilosec immediately helped with the tightness - BUT gave me upper chest spasms and tightness. So I had to stop it a few days ago.

Well I have been on the increased Flovent now for a couple of months and about a week ago I got SEVERE upper chest tightness that WILL NOT STOP :( :(

Before this I NEVER COUGHED and I NEVER WHEEZED - just got tight.

This past week I feel like my nose is plugged up and like my upper chest is tight and very difficult to breath - FOR THE FIRST TIME the albuterol seems to help when I use it.

Do you think the Flovent could be making me sick???

HELP!!!! I have an appointment with my Dr. on Friday
