i have a friend who is about to be a first time mom, she has decided to breast feed but if shes anything like i was(which we're alot alike!) she'll probably not do so well at breast feeding and want to give up. i breast fed for the first two weeks then i pumped and fed for the first two and a half months and i was done! it just didnt agree with me. anyways...what i'm wondering is what is the best pump in your opinion?? i used someone elses, evenflo something, it worked pretty good but was exspensive so i heard..which is why i borrowed one. so please please give me some suggestions! thanks! :)

I had a Medela Pump-in-Style for the first three months, but it was too slow for me. I rented a hospital grade pump from the hospital and it works MUCH BETTER!! It called the Medela Lactina. I highly recommend just renting something. You'll stick with it longer if you do.

I used both a hospital grade Medela (while DS was in the hospital) and after he was able to come home, I purchased a Medela Pump In Style. I feel like they both worked equally well and by purchasing, I have it for all future children. It's a double electric pump, so I could pump for 15 minutes and empty both breasts. If DS had been growing better I'd still be pumping, but he just wasn't doing well until we switched him to formula. So, I highly recommend this one, if she has it in the budget. I got mine on base for $220, but they're around $240 at Babies R Us.

I have an Ameda Purely Yours and It works really well for me. Its a little pricey but I like it.

I was also given a Medela Harmony manual pump at the hospital. Its not as efficient as the electric pump but its comfortable and it gets the job done.

I actually used it this morning before I left the house with my son. I really can't complain about it. The one they gave me is a Medela Harmony.

I was only planning on breastfeeding for 5 months so I thought renting would be the most cost effective, but bf and pumping went so well I continued for 10 months.
I highly recommend the hospital grade pump. It's not a hand manual one, but an electric one. Mine was Ameda something...
I visited the breastfeeding center at the hospital and inquired about buying one of their Medela Pump in Style or Ameda Purely Yours, but then two lactation consultants said the hospital grade pump is more effective and overall better (especially if you've started and have gotten used to a hospital grade pump).

The hospital grade pumpis awesome.. no doubt. The thing is if youwant to bf for a while, then the amount you spend on rent would equal up to buying and owning your own pump.
My esperience was that the hospital grade was VERY useful is establishing milksupplyat the start and while I was still settling with the idea of bf and pumping. But once that was established(3 weeks or so) the pump in style was good to continue with.(SInce a friend loaned me the pump in style and that worked out great)

Everyone I have ever talked to has said what was said above - the "hospital grade" pump by medela is the best, but you can't go buy that at Babies R Us. It is far too expensive and usually people just rent it. Second best is the Medela pump. I had an electric dual pump of theirs that was awesome. It also had a battery function but that never worked well.

Another GREAT gift (IMO) for a BF mom is a nice nursing veil. The best one I have I ordered from a SAHM's online business. She designed it herself. The ones available at the stores just never worked well for me. Their is a black one that was too short and a waffle-weave on that worked ok, just my baby was always hot under there.

Hello,

I am breastfeeding and pumping as well, and I use the Medela Lactina. It is absolutley awesome! It is for rental, but I save that amount in formula costs. I have been storing milk since my baby was born 4 months ago, and I have about 3 1/2 months of milk as well as breastfeeding her during the day!

I have friends that are Lactation specialists, and they reccommend both the Medela and Ameda line of pumps. However, the pumps for rental may be the "hospital grade", or pumps used for moms of NICU babies. These pumps are needed to establish and maintain longterm milk supply. The Medela Pump in Style is also awesome, and it comes in a neat carrying case. Just a little less powerful but awesome if used while returning to work. In my opinion, I was able to pump more milk in less time with the hospital grade. Good Luck!
