my daughter just turned two and since we're having a new baby coming in august, i decided to take the bottle away now (i didn't take the bottle from my first until two and a half because she was two when her little sister was born and i didn't want to cause any extra adjustment issues there!)..... i've never been one to support taking the bottle away at a year old.... ANYWAY....

i was a little concerned that we'd have problems because my two year old is very attached to her bottles and is a little more opinionated than my first was! BUT, we went to walmart one day last week, and i told her we need to get some special cups for her milk because her bottles were going all gone. i let her pick out some special sippies, we went home in time for naptime, she said she wanted a milk bottle, i said bottles all gone, you get froggy milk or flower milk now (she'd picked out a froggy cup and a flower cup). i let her choose which cup to use, and we haven't looked back!

just thought i'd share how we did it, because my two year old is the most spoiled rotten, fussy, picky, opinionated, stubborn child you will EVER meet! i love her to death, but the child makes me crazy! i figure if this method works for my two year old, ANYONE can do it! :)

I am glad the transition was easy. The bottle was never an issue for Alexa. I switched from Avent bottles to Nuby's at 12 months. The Nubys have three tops to choose from and my daughter didn't like the silicone wide sippy top, so we went from nipple to silicone straw top. I had a hard time this summer trying to get her to suck from a straw, she didn't understand that she didn't have to tip everything like a bottle to drink. A few months ago she finally understood and we use Nudy straw flip tops when we are on the go and she drinks from a regular glass at home. I wasn't concerned about that transition as much as the pacifier. We got rid of that at 16 months. I used it a lot to make her stop fussing in public, but she cried for a few minutes the first night while she was trying to fall asleep and that was it too! Sometimes they are more ready than we are.

This was years ago but I think is it funny. I needed to get my 2 year old of her bottle due our 3rd child being born. One night after she went to bed, I took her bottle and sprinkled coffee grinds in it so it would look like tiny bugs in her bottle:D. The next morning when she asked for her bottle, I opened the cabinet and said " OMGosh your bottle is full of bugs and we will need to throw it away". She was grossed out by the looks of it, threw it in the garbage and never looked back. She is 26 now and when I told her that story, she laughed and said I was mean. LOL Whatever works, right?

Wow maybe I can do this too! My ds just turned two on the 30th and he is still taking a bottle at naptime and bedtime. I also am a little hesitant to say that he is also addicted to his pacifier. My plan was to take the paci right when he turned two but he has been getting his two year molars and thought i would wait awhile. Anyways the whole bottle thing sounds very encouraging after hearing everyone else. He has drank his water out of a sippy since he was well under a year so I think maybe it will be ok.

Linda- that story makes me laugh soooo hard. That would work with my ds too cause he is always so concerned when things are dirty or aren't right.
Thanks ladies.

oh yeah, mine is addicted to her binkies too. not sure when we'll get rid of those! she's getting pretty good at having them only when she's ready to sleep (naps and night time), but i don't know how she'll handle not having them at all! she's cutting teeth too, so i don't want to take the binky away just yet!

with my first, i waited until she was 2 1/2 and one day showed her pictures of really horrible teeth on the internet. i told her it's what can happen to our teeth if we have too many binkies. i asked her if she wanted ugly black crookedy teeth or princess teeth. she of course chose princess teeth, so i told her no more binkies if she wanted princess teeth. she threw out her binkies and never wanted one since! funny thing was, at the time, i was only trying to transition her to just binkies at sleep times!

LOVE the coffee grounds story! that sounds like something MY mom would do!!! :)

They will be cutting teeth for a while. My mom would always try to talk me into letting her keep it because of her teeth. But she is 21 months and she still has teeth coming in and at some point it has to go, sooner than later! So, I know how that goes!
The coffee story is genious and funny!
