View Full Version : Treadmill or Elliptical?

Hey all,
As I mentioned after my visit, my Dr. has prescribed jogging on a treadmill while "spotting" small items in a book or magazine 1m away. The problem is I have weak ankles and knees and would rather avoid all the wear and tear that jogging entails, so I suggested using an elliptical machine instead. The PA said no, that I needed the "jerk" associated with each step, and while that has some logic I'm going to try the elliptical machine anyway. Has anyone else received this "prescription" and noticed a difference between these machines? Thanks for any input you can offer...I'm currently "jogging in place" in front of a music stand with a book on it, and it's definitely made me feel more off balance so I hope it's working. Gotta work up to 1/2 hour though...

How about (fast) walking? It wouldn't put quite as much strain on your knees/ankles as jogging but would still give you the jerky movement.

I am not sure about machines other than the treadmill.. The bad knees stuff can be an issue....But like Sipa said... Start walking .. then slowly increase the speed.. Keep the treadmill level and if you do decide to run... It can be running at an esxtremely slow pace...

Dan,

Funny about you feeling lousy after the treadmill. I was hitting a treadmill hard in New Zealand recently. I'd come off feeling dizzy for a while and then it would go but then I started getting uncharacteristic dizziness hours later out of the blue after a few days of it - and now I'm in a relapse again.

Take it easy on those things. I'd be doing a faster walking pace only on it if I were you and not suddenly jogging ... and even then increase your time on it slowly and monitor how you are feeling.

Best ... Scott
