When I am just about to fall to sleep my body jumps in fright. I can breathe alright but the sensation feels like I am going to die. This goes on quite a bit through the night until I finally go to sleep. If I awake early in the morning and then try to go back to sleep, I don't get this feeling.....

First thing first.. read the sleep hygiene post. If you follow it and try the natural relaxation and sleep aides there... and things do not get better you should look into getting a consultation with a sleep specialist. There are sleep disorders which cause this.. normally it is the result of sleep deprivation.. which is the side effect of an untreated sleep disorder.. or having young children and no sleep as a result :).

Look into the signs of sleep apnea. 2 out of 100 people have it statistically. It is also genetically dominant so if you have a parent or sybling with it... Also look into sleep paralysis and sleep disorders in general. If you read enough of the symptom lists out there.. things will begin to jump out at you if you are a likely candidate.

Good luck finding the source of your issue.
