Hi I am a 21 year old male who has been athletically active since I was about 4. I played three years of college baseball and still workout.

About a year or so ago I started to notice what I'm sure is hemmorhoids forming. I have all the usual symptoms, itching, very uncomfortable to sit down, and I have even seen small lumps around my bottom that seem to be swollen veins. I have tried this ointment called Heal Hemmorhois but it doesn't seem to be working too well.

Today it was probably the worst its been. I have been very sick lately and I'm just now getting over it but I've had a very strong cough for almost a month. I know this just makes things worse, but today I was still coughing and checked on myself becuase I was feeling very uncomfortable and noticed the enlarged vein is bigger than its ever been.

It really really upsets/depresses me to think I am suffering from this at such an early age and it worries me maybe something more sever may be wrong.

Anyway, any ideas? I am going to try and see my doctor tomorrow for professional advice.

Thanks in advance.

also, is it highly possible for someone to have a hem removed or after seeking medical help have the hems go away for good? Or is more of a once you get them, they will keep coming back the rest of your life. I can't imagine living life like this.

nobody has anyything they can say?

I haven't had a chance to go to the doc because my insurance forces me to see my general physician and get a referral to another specialist.

Does sitting alot cause hems, or will it just irritate them? And by the same token will standing too long do the same??

Hi - I just came across your post. I am 23 yrs old, and tomorrow I'm having a hemorrhoid surgery to remove both internal and external hemorrhoids. I was in a very similar situation to yours. I have always been very athletic and active, and generally consider myself to be very heathly and eat healthy.

I noticed hemorrhoids about a year ago, and ever since they just kept on getting worse. It got to the point to where I was seeing blood in the toilet, on the toilet paper, and I had a significant amount of discomfort and itching. I finally decided to do something about it, but with my insurance, I had to see my general physician, then he referred me to a specialist, I got a colonoscopy done (which turned out normal, thank god) and then he referred me to a colorectal surgeon.

And now here I am, scared to death that I am only 23 yrs old and going in tomorrow for, what I've heard, is a surgery worse than childbirth. It is something that needs to be done, though, and I keep telling myself they would've never went away if I sat around and did nothing about them.

Don't worry - I wouldn't panic just yet. You might have several options to consider, one being just changing your diet and consuming a lot more fiber to keep your bowel movements soft and regular. If you have tried every over-the-counter remedy and nothing has helped, I would at least consider going to your doctor to check things out. It sucks having to jump through so many hoops, but the longer you wait, the worse it could get. There's no point in holding off on it if you can make a few adjustments and not have to find yourself in the situation I am in now.

Lucky for me I have a very high pain tolerance (two drs have told me so) so this shouldn't be as bad as some of these posts. And we're young so I'd like to think we heal faster :)

Feel free to let me know how things go, and just remember that although you are young, this is actually a pretty common problem.

WOW! Thank you for your reply.

It comforts me a little just KNOWING that I'm not the black sheep here. I hope everything goes well for you and you heal up fast. I have not notices any blood what-so-ever as of now, and I have also started taking Fiber Choice daily which seems to help a great amount. What gets me I think is sitting (possibly standing?) for long periods of time.

After I have a BM I seem to feel almost completely normal, but if I sit for too long after then they flar up pretty bad. If I can't find a happy medium withtin the next couple of mounths for sure, then I will see my doctor.

Thank you once again, I was losing hope on this board.

Have a good night.

Hi Quicksaveme,

I had to chime in here because I am a 39 year old mom and have had one bout of hemmorhoids in my life. I was 22 or 23 and I had NO idea what was even going on! Thinking I was a young & hip career woman, I was way too embarrassed to ask any friends or family, so after days of excruciating pain, I went to the doctor. Sure enough-hemmorhoids. I have no idea why I got them.

The good news is my doctor gave me some cream and within a few days they were gone. I have not had another since. I don't know if that's unusual or not, I just wanted you to know that it doesn't necessarily mean a lifetime of hemmorhoid trouble! Good luck.

Well thank you so much for your reply. If I can not find a happy medium or feel like they are making life more dull for me then I will go to the doctor. I know it seems like I'm wasting time but as of now I can deal with it. I have been using this ointment called Heal Hemmorhoid by Natural Oils and it seems to help. Also taking Fiber Choice everyday helps as well.

Thank you for your reply again.

You aren't alone. I am 22 and have internal and external hemmorhoids. They are getting so painfully itchy and disruptive that I am finally going to see a surgeon about them. I really hope they can take a more conservative approach (rubber band versus scapel).

Your doctor might prescribe you hydrocortisone suppositories. That worked for me for a year. The best advice is to get ahead of the hemmorhoids and prevent them for forming. You might only need suppositories to reduce the inflammation.
