I began taking Toprol XL back in July for my blood pressure. I have noticed that in the afternoon especially, if I sit still for a minute, I stare and feel tired. I have only taken my blood pressure once at home since July and it was in the 130/80 range so I don't think my blood pressure is too low. Do you have to deal with this type of side effect with every bp medicine?

On another subject, the end of my tongue feels tingly. Could that be related to bp medicine?

Oh, and my nose stays cold most of the time!

Am I just a worrywart?

Shedrake- Fatigue is a common side effect of Toprol and many of the beta blockers.

A lot of people on them get tired or dizzy, especially if their blood pressure and pulse rate are reduced too much. Even if your BP is running at 130/80, one can still feel fatigued from these meds. If your tiredness doesn't subside (and often it will, given time), inform your doctor.... It may be possible to reduce the dosage, alter the type of beta-blocker or change to a different form of medication. Beta blockers should only be stopped on medical advice and under supervision. Sudden withdrawal can cause a dangerous increase in blood pressure and angina.

And just to reassure you, not all BP meds produce the same side effects in everybody. We are all different and one man's meat can be another's poison, as they say. The angiotensin 2 receptor blockers seem to have the least side effects (Diovan, Atacand, Benicar etc) and I'm a BIG fan of them, since I did have side effect problems with the beta blockers and diuretics.
Now, no more side effects and great BP control.

The tingling tongue and cold nose are not listed as side effects for Beta Blockers although cold hands and toes ARE, so although it's unlikely your nose is cold because of the drug, anything is possible. Again, if you are really uncomfortable. talk to your doctor....
