Hi my sister suffers from anxiety attacks every now and then. I take ativan and she ask her doctor if he would give her something for her issues and she mentioned that i took ativan so thats what he gave her. Well she went to a new doctor and told her about taking it but that it doesnt seem to do anything for her so the doctor said to stop taking it ASAP because it is a horrible drug. She put her on Buspar and told her she didnt have to take it everyday just when she needed it. Now from what i have read you need to take it everyday cause it takes a while to get in your system, its not like xanax and ativan that helps right away. Is this correct??

My son is on buspar and it is my understanding that you DO take a prescribed dosage as to build up a therapeutic level. NOT taken as needed. He takes 2 every night before bed-I'm not sure but maybe it's 30 mg. total. He also takes klonopin as needed for anxiety.
but his main complaint is OCD, then anxiety.

Buspar is taken like an antidepressant. You need to take it every day. I have been on it for 3 1/2 years and it works really well for me. Godbless

Buspar has to be taken every day for about 2 weeks before you start to see the effects. I was on Buspar for approximately 3 years, and finally begged my psychiatrist to take me off of it because I had unbelievable fatigue and loss of interest in EVERYTHING. I guess it worked well when I first needed it, but then , when I no longer needed it as much, it was really hurting me. I am now off of the Buspar for about a year and only on Geodon and Lexapro and I feel much better. I guess the important thing is to let the doctor know how you are feeling and to discuss your issues with him.

Tell your sister to go to another doctor. Yes, buspar is not a drug you take as needed. Also, Ativan is NOT a horrible drug. I feel this doctor must be one of those who are anti benzos. if you take it correctly, it is a good drug for anxiety. I take 1/2 mg. daily. Anti-depressants just don't work well for me. Everyone is different, however I feel this doctor is not giving her good advice. Good luck:angel:

Thank You everyone for the advice. I thought i was right but wanted to get some opinions.

I am on ativan and it works wonders for me. I also think she has one of those anti-benzo doctors. I told her she needs to find a new doctor that this one does not know what she is talking about. She did not start taking the Buspar though.
