Wow. I feel much better already knowing Im not the only "20 something" experiencing this! 2 Fridays ago I started having heart palpitations..felt fluttering and it felt like I had to cough. Got worse. Got chest pains - some sharp that go all the way across my chest some dull. My left arm hurt here and there. I couldnt sleep because the symptoms were keeping me awake!
Fast forward to today. I havent had any caffiene at all today, actually wasnt very hungry but am very tired. Just feel drained. Noticed that my heart was beating so hard and fast it felt like it was going to jump out of my chest. I noticed before that I was weak and kind of hot, sweating in wierd spots (forehead, neck, etc) even though my house is set on 62F.
I have to add, Im a 27 year old male, 6' 165lbs, not overweight but a super strong family history of severe heart disease (both grandparents dead before 50 due to coronary heart disease and my uncle died in November at the age of 52 due to advanced coronary heart disease) That was my Mom's side of the family; My Dad's side of the family is just as bad. My older Brother (39) and older Sister (34) both have mitral valve prolapse, but Ive never been checked.
Ok so now that Ive gotten that out of the way, My Dad brought over his pulse/o2 meter (he had a heart attack 2 years ago and has to check pulse/ox often) and my heart beat was 160bpm resting in bed. Ok,ok I know what you are all thinking- anxiety. So I closed my eyes, put a wet rag on my head (was sweating although thermostat is set on 62F!) and put myself in the zone (lol). Heart rate goes done, over the course of an hour, to 90bpm.
During this whole time my heart was fluttering, chest pains, "warm" sensation throughout my chest, like vicks vapor rub is in there. My legs ache. What is going on?!? I'd hate to go to the hospital, I have a basic insurance policy and Im still paying on my gall bladder surgery last June.
Can I wait until Monday to see my MD, or should I go in?

Hi,
I can relate to this part of your post. For the last while I have been experiencing the heart pounding especially upon waking, but I did have the sweating for a while as well to the point where my clothes were damp. I was diagnosed recently with elevated blood pressure and was put on a beta blocker (medication to slow the heart rate). This has reduced my BP and has helped with the palpitations, but hasn't gotten rid of them. I'm in the process of changing medication to see will it improve things for me. I have never experienced hearting pounding on this scale before all this!
I'm not aware of any heart disease problems in my family, except dad, but he passed at 70 and drank and smoked most of his life. All things considered, he had good innings.
No harm to have blood pressure checked.
Regards,
Marantz. :)

My son is also 27 yrs old and he recently had palpitations due to a strained muscle in his chest. I sent him to a good Internist that ordered Stress Echo Testing. The doc told him at his age this is not heart related it would be very rare. When they did the test by chance they found that he had a rare heart tumor 1 in 2 million. But since then strain has healed and the palps are gone, I think they were anxiety from the pain and being scared. The doctor said nothing was realated to the tumor because it is 1 cm. I'm not trying to scare you just wanted to let you know what the doctor said about heart and your age. I would get tested and then you won't worry. Perhaps it is anxiety. Good luck to you. Thanks for the responses everybody. I wore a halter monitor for the past 24 hours and returned it an hour ago. Im scheduled for a stress test and ultrasound in the next following weeks.
Today I started taking fish oil supplements. Hoping that will help.
