Hey all,
I have been having such spasms for about a week now and was put on Nexium by my Internist on Thursday. Still having the spasms, but no more heartburn. I see a lot of cases where people talk about eating "soda crackers" to help with the spasms. What type of crackers are these? Are they like saltines or something?
I take a calcuim channel blocker 2x a day since last October after having a bout with SVTs and I think it is a cause for my spasms and heartburn. Never had any issues until after Christmas with heartburn or "wet burps" until then and hate it.
Thanks,
Lyl

Hi, Yes, soda crackers are your regular saltines. They are not a preventative, but do take them while having an attack.

How long after eating does it seem like you have an attack? Mine usually happen about 3 hours after eating. Is that normal.

Hi Lylone,
Actually, you can get an attack at any time, it is not necessarily eating that brings on a spasm. I usually get mine in the middle of the night, so go figure.....
It is very rare that I get one during the day.

They feel like I have to burp and then it spasms but no air or anything comes up. Just a wierd throb and maybe 2 or three in a series, but that is all. I don't have any pain or stuff that comes up. Sometimes I get a wet burp, but nothing that stings or hurts my throat. My internist looked at my throat and it wasn't even red. Sometimes it makes me cough, but then I do have some post nasal drip going on also. The lump in the back of my throat is constant and the spasms are during the day or when I lay down before bed. They have yet to wake me up at night.
Thank you and I hope they stop soon too. They are so darn annoying.

Lylone, I just wanted to put in here that esophageal spams make you feel like you might be having a heart attack, so I think that what you are describing is not esophageal spasms. The spasms do hurt, horribly bad.

Does it feel like your heart is skipping beats or flip flopping?

Lylone,
I take a calcuim channel blocker 2x a day since last October after having a bout with SVTs and I think it is a cause for my spasms and heartburn.
I have been on the same medication for over a year now. One of my new medical books says that the calcium channel blockers cause GERD and breathing problems in some people. Reading about this was quite a surprise. Lucky us! I didn't have any symptoms of GERD, except nausea, until about four or five months ago. I now have them all as well as the LPR symptoms. I suspect the PPI has contributed and is responsible for at least some of the symptoms. :(
