Hi gang. Just thought I would let you know Im home from the hospital..
Surgery was a nightmare. What should have been 2 hours, was actually 6...then, I had such excruitating pain they wouldnt let me go home until the following morning, but I spent the night in the "short stay" unit, not a regular room.
Pain level is insane right now. I havent been able to get comfortable since I got home on Friday morning, thus, I hadnt even tried to get online. I cant get up and down my steps at all without alot of help...I have spoken to the doctor twice, and he says "bear with it" and that the pain might be caused by the MS. He says that in the past patients with MS have complained of more pain then the average patient...nice to know, huh?
My MS symptoms are flairing in a huge way..the tingling, the acheyness, the muscle spasms are all at a 10 right now- my Neuro says this is probably due to the amount of pain Im in...
As far as the actual surgery goes, they didnt have to "take" everything, however, they did do quite a bit to me. Ive got a huge incision across my belly, another one thru my belly button, and yet the rest was done from "down below". Im aching in 3 different places and cant tell where it hurts the most. Probably my belly button area, as it hurts to move in any direction due to the staples across my abdomen....
For anyone who has ever questioned whether or not surgery affects MS, the answer is YES. At least in my case...I had problems with the anesthesia, complications with the bleeding...the list goes on....
Will update you as I start to feel human again - but just wanted to say hey and thank all of you for the support you have been sending. Love you all.
Nikki

Nikki, welcome home! I'm so sorry the surgery was such an ordeal! But Ms. Good Attitude, you KNOW that whatever you're experiencing now will pass. Hang in there, girl -- and put the family to work! Keep your feet up and don't be trying to get up and down those stairs for a while!!!
Edited to add -- have the hubby go out and rent funny movies! The addage "laughter is the best medicine" actually HAS been supported in scientific studies! ;) (Let us know if you need suggestions. :))

Aww honey, I'm so sorry :(
I thought your surgery was this upcoming week, I've had a lot going on, sorry I didn't write sooner. I'm glad it's behind you, though. I've always heard that the first 3 days following surgery are the worst. It gets better after that. Of course, your right, the MS stuff probably IS kicked up. I hope the worst is behind you and I'm sorry I didn't give you encouragement sooner. I got a place to live so I've had much going on and haven't been on much this week. Take care and get back on your feet.

Bearygood and Kim,
Thanks as always for the support. Your right about laughter Bearygood, however, right now, if I laugh, hiccup or even cough, my stitches HURT! Im actually taking cough syrup to try to relieve all the chest congestion because the doctor is so concerned about me popping a stitch (or ten)! But, when this pain passes, laughter and comedy will be the best medicine!
Kim, hope all is well in your world...keep us posted ok?
Pam, thank you for the well wishes although what I went thru is no laughing matter...if you care to read more you can search on my posts on healthboards, otherwise, Ill just say thank you for the wishes for a fast recovery.
FYI, Kim if the first three days are the worst, then Im actually going to look forward to tomororw! I just did my Rebif shot, on top of everything else I am taking, and feel like crawling into a hole! Im constipated, taking something for that- taking pain meds- taking motrin round the clock and bleeding like a stuck pig...there is NOTHING fun about this! I just wish I could find a comfortable position to stay in for more then ten minutes...sitting, hurts. Laying down is impossible - sleeping is almost out of the question. SO, your kind words make a difference...thank you!
Hugs

I hope those last few post added some much needed humor to your day!! You probobly needed a smile at this point.
I'm so sorry you feel so lousy. It will be better in a few days, I'm sure. You and my mom went into surgery the same day, at the same time so as my thoughts were with my mom, you were on my mind too. She's feeling horrible too but day by day, things will get better. I promise!!
As uncomfortable as you are, sleep as much as you can. The rest will do you good. Even if you have to do it sitting up. Try to focus on something else besides the pain your feeling. I know thats tough to do. Getting on the board is probobly the best thing for you because so many people here support and care for you.
I hope tomorrow is a better day!!

Hi Nikki
Far out 6 hours huh ?? My goodness thats rough. I hope you feeling a little better today. Get your hubby to get you some magazines, DVD's or even books toget you through the boredom of doing NOTHING. Honey take this time out to do exactly that.. nothing... Let him fuss over you.
It sucks to say you have to be ill to have someone fuss over you. But take in all the attention . You deserve a break.
Take care Nikki.

Hi everyone. Thanks not only for thinking of me, but for your attempts at making me laugh. It does help to know that you guys care!
Monday morning, thought Id be at least able to get dressed by today, but no go. I cant sit up by myself, I cant even walk up the steps alone (the dizziness and pain of putting one foot in front of the other is too much) so work is out of the question for another few days...I was supposed to have an interview for a new job tomrorow at 4 pm- am STILL hopeful that I can fake it and get there...husband will drive me, but whether or not I can put on interview clothes and actually get into the car is still a mystery! I cant wait until I can wear real pants instead of sweats again!
The newest dilemma is the whole bathroom issue. Because I try to hydrate and drink as much water as I can a day, Im in the bathroom peeing all day long...however, the other end isnt cooperating. I know that pain pills, along with stress can make it hard to go regularly- but Im actually wondering if this didnt bring on a whole new set of MS related stuff for me....will it return to its usual state of on and off problems, or am I going to have problems like this which are going to be constant and progressive due to the MS? Its a question that my doctor cant answer, so I wonderd if any of you have any experience with MS related bathroom issues, in conjunction with either surgery or pain pills? And, what do you do about it?
Thats my question of the day...hope all of you are having a very good Monday so far.
Hugs
Nikki

Nikki, please, do NOT even entertain those thoughts and give them life!!!! Girl, you're just a few days out of surgery! Even for those not with MS, surgery is trauma to the body. Give it time to readjust and do NOT feed yourself negative energy. It's way too early to see what will be, okay?
As far as the bathroom, I think you should call your doctor's office and ask them if it would be wise/okay to put some more fiber into your body. If so, have your hubby buy some prunes and on the more dramatic side, there's Psyllium, which you can buy in any health food store. (I'd try prunes first.)
Remember, your body is adjusting -- please give it some time. Way too soon to worry, okay? :)

Thanks Beary- always there to remind me that Im not superwoman, arent you? Appreciated!
I actually did break down and try a laxative last night, an all natural one made from vegtable products? It worked, even if it did give me horrible cramps. I see the doctor on Thursday and Im trying hard not to bug him till then...in the meantime, I do usually eat a high fiber diet...Ill add the prunes just as soon as I can get him to go back to the market! Between laxatives and pads and prunes.......can you imagine?!

Try The Prunes,i Take Pain Meds And The Constipation Is Worse Than The Constant Peeing.but The Prunes Do Work As My Pain Meds Does Cause This.
I Know This Interveiw Is Important, but If You Can't Do It Don't,don't Cause Yourself More Un Needed Pain.
Its Hard To Figure Out Is This A Ms Flair Or Is This From The Surgery.only Time Will Tell.so Give Your Body Time To Heal.

Hi Erin, and Duttin.
Thanks to both of you...I did break down and send my husband out for something "natural' in the way of a laxative and took it last night..its working, so I think Ill live..(even if I do have to move into the bathroom).
Thank you for the compliments, Erin...its nice to know Im appreciated somewhere in this world. Really.
Toni- husband went out for the night. MAYBE Ill be able to get some rest. It seems that he has found 200 things to do around here, even though I cant get off the couch and its starting to irritate me. I cant sleep still in my bed because I still cant lie flat on my back or side...so the couch is the only place where I can put my feet up and pillows behind my back and attempt to close my eyes. It worked last night for a good 5 hours. (Thank you Ambien). As for tomorrow, well, tomorrow is another day, well see if I can get up and get dressed when it happens. Will let you know if I go or not..
Big hugs to you all.

I'm sorry your surgery was so yucky! I've been away from the computer for a few days but I've been thinking of you and wishing you well. I've never had any kind of surgery and I cannot imagine what your body is going thru, but I hope you get some rest.
I think that you're amazing for even trying to go to this interview tomorrow. I'd be such a wimp I wouldn't even consider doing that, no matter how necessary it was. I wish you luck, and it's nice that your husband is going to drive and dress you. Sorry about the bathroom stuff; I get that a lot but it always passes!
Warmly, April

Thanks Mitch. Just read about your trials, and responded...thinking of you, too.
I had another phone call today about yet another job interview! Crazy, when it rains, it pours. Im definately going to that one, as it is local and not until Friday...
Its tough knowing what to do right now. I have a job where Im comfortable, able to take time off whenever I need it for doctors appts, MS related stuff, and just me- starting another job brings up all the disclosure issues and whether to disclose or not, figuring out how to take the time off for me, when needed...its a whole lot of thinking to do....
But, right now, still trying to get thru today and figure out whether to go to the first interview or not...it would be a no brainer if I could figure out how to put clothes on!!! Still laying around in sweats all day...
hugs

I have a job where Im comfortable, able to take time off whenever I need it for doctors appts, MS related stuff, and just me- starting another job brings up all the disclosure issues and whether to disclose or not, figuring out how to take the time off for me, when needed...its a whole lot of thinking to do....
But, right now, still trying to get thru today and figure out whether to go to the first interview or not...it would be a no brainer if I could figure out how to put clothes on!!! Still laying around in sweats all day...
