View Full Version : Toprol and Anxiety? Did it go away when you went off Toprol or beta blocker?

Just wondering if any former ToprolXl or other Beta Blocker Users developed anxiety while on it and if so, did the anxiety go away when you went off. How long did it take etc? I am still wrestling with what is wrong with me and if its anxiety related ( never had this before) could it be from the Toprol?

I have read the side effects and do know depression is one of them. Still Tapering off the Toprol

Thanks
Silvia

Actually Silvia, all of the beta blockers I have been on (Ziac, Atenolol, and Toprol) somehow, someway, helped decrease my anxiety. When I finally was weened off of my last one (Toprol XL), I did notice the anxiety jump, but that diminished over a few weeks time.

It might be possible that these meds have that adverse effect on you. I tried Paxil, for example, and ended up more anxious. I also tried Zyban (Wellbutrin) a while back to help me get over my nicotine addiction and that med made me very agitated and irritable.

Thanks for your input. I tried Zoloft for a week and I could not take it. I had the worse jitters and dizziness ever. I have heard from a few people that when weaning off toprol they had some effects.

I might have been that since I lost weight ( could not eat, no appetite, found out I have some acid reflux and was getting lump in throat from it or anxiety?) the Toprol may have been lowering my BP at times too low an I was getting dizzy and lightheaded etc. I was also so tired.

Still just trying to figure out what is wrong with me.

I was on 25mg Tenormin for years. MD switched me to 25mg Toprol within a week I had severe anxiety problems. Discontinued the Toprol and resumed the Tenormin and the anxiety went away.

Never had to take anxiety meds. until I started taking bp meds. When you stop taking Toprol, it does elevate your heart rate for a period of time from what I have heard. You need to wean off of it.

Hi Blueisland

Yes I am weaning off of Toprol per Dr. Instructions. I am not sure if the Toprol is my problem since I took it for a year ok until I lost weight and problems started ( see other posts). But when I went to 1/2 dose I felt better. Felt worse week of ever other day dose ( this week).

I am just trying to find solutions as to why I feel so bad. I was told I had anxiety, but since I never had this and am on Toprol I am just wondering.....

YOu have symptoms that are a mirror of mine..I had 150-100 BP in Dec last year..I was 180 pounds witha heavy weight..I started on BP Meds ToprolXL 50 mg..then started exercising and brough my weight to 160 pounds. then I started feeling dizzy all the time..typical low BP symptoms..so went to 25 mg of Toprol Xl but since at Dr visits my BP still measure 150/100 dr is not willing to take me off it..I have anxiety symptoms 3-4 days a week..its like you are anxious as if you have a meeting to speak in and you are unprepared the whole day..thatz the feeling..even though ToprolXl is supposed reduce anxiety symtoms..I have been on 25 mg for long enough so it is not about withdrawal..Im going to have my dr check my adrenalin..

Hi

I had been trying to lose weight and lost about 10 pounds, but took probably a year or so. Then
I lost 12 pounds more in less than 3 weeks due to swallowing problem and lack of appetite and living on liquids due to stuck food in throat feeling, that is when all this nightmare started. Happened at end of vacation in August.

I suspect the Toprol may be adding to anxiety because of weight loss and maybe reducing my BP too much at times. Had 2 weeks or so of lightheadedness and jitters and dizziness etc.

I also discovered I had some acid reflux and a small hiatal hernia. GI that did endoscopy thinks swallowing problem was more anxiety, I think it could have been Acid since I get lump in throat at times and stopped while on prevacid, but still not much of an appetite and don't want to loose more weight. I never had an eating problem before. I want my appetite back.

On my home monitor (not sure how good it is) my BP would go down to 98/60 when I was laying in bed watching TV after the weight loss. That might be too low for me.

Dr. is not giving me anything yet for BP to replace Toprol because he wants to know about the side effects. Said as long as I monitor it and its not too high that it would be ok.

Let me know if anything else comes up an we can compare notes.
